Gillingham’s leading scorer Tom Eaves is expected to come back into the side for the trip to face Southend United on New Year’s Day.
Eaves, who had been out because of a thigh problem, was sent on for the second half of Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers, with Brandon Hanlan likely to give way again.
Midfielder Dean Parrett, who had been carrying a hamstring issue, and defender Barry Fuller are both doubtful after picking up fitness problems against Rovers.
Defender Max Ehmer remains sidelined following a dislocated shoulder, while midfielder Regan Charles-Cook has a hamstring problem.
Southend could have midfielder Luke Hyam available again following illness for the Sky Bet League One match against Steve Lovell’s side.
Forward Harry Bunn, fit again from a thigh problem, should feature after his late substitute appearance in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Coventry. Midfielder Dru Yearwood could be involved again after being forced off against Oxford on Boxing Day with cramp, while goalkeeper Mark Oxley (back) continues his recovery, along with defenders Jason Demetriou (knee) and Harry Lennon (fractured leg).
Southend have won both of their last two league games against Gillingham, having only won two of their previous 12 in the English Football League before this (D5 L5).
Gillingham’s 4-0 defeat at Southend last season is their only loss in their last five visits there in all competitions (W3 D1).
Southend lost 2-0 at AFC Wimbledon on New Year’s Day last year; they haven’t suffered consecutive losses in Football League matches played on the opening day of the calendar year since 1985.
Gillingham have won each of their last three league matches on New Year’s Day, since a goalless draw with Leyton Orient in 2008.
Stephen McLaughlin has had a hand in four goals in his three league appearances against Gillingham for Southend (three goals, one assist).
