A superb goalkeeping performance from Nathan Bishop helped Southend United to a 2-0 win against Gillingham.
The Shrimpers shot-stopper made a series of fine saves to ensure all three points for Chris Powell’s side.
Bishop kept out Luke O’Neill’s free-kick in the first half before the Shrimpers netted with one of their own in the 40th minute as Sam Mantom’s effort from the left flank missed a cluster of players in the penalty box before nestling in the right hand corner of the net.
The Gills nearly replied when the fit again Tom Eaves headed over from close range before the striker was denied by Bishop when clean through on goal.
After the break, Bishop impressively tipped over Mark Byrne’s shot from 20 yards before the Shrimpers keeper did well to keep out Eaves’ close range effort before the game exploded into life in stoppage time.
Southend striker Theo Robinson was sent off for two bookable offences before Gills were adamant Connor Ogilvie’s effort had crossed the line.
However, with the visitors still protesting, Simon Cox teed up Taylor Moore to score to double the lead.
The defeat sees Steve Lovell’s side stay 18th place in League One, but crucially now just one point above the relegation zone.
They do however have a break from league action this coming weekend as Gillingham entertain Cardiff City in the Third Round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
