Testimonial’s are a rarity these days, very few players stay with a club for ten years anymore.
Chris Solly’s testimonial match with Aston Villa will be Charlton’s final warm-up match before the season starts, though Lee Bowyer may want a private match during the week.
It is an impossible situation for the manager at the moment as there could be as many as six new arrivals before the Addicks pitch up at Ewood Park next week for the season opener.
Bowyer can only deal with the here and now though, and his starting line-up may give a clue to his current thinking.
He seems fond of playing three centre-backs at the moment, so it will be interesting to see if he perseveres with the system.
One player who could be arriving next week is Bristol City striker, Matty Taylor.
The Robins snatched him from city rivals Bristol Rovers in January 2017, but he has failed to reproduce his scoring form at Ashton Gate.
Taylor is 29-years-old and City would want a fee for him. Charlton, however, are reluctant to buy older players and the Robins would probably not entertain a loan deal, so there is a lot of work to be done if the move is to happen.
But today is all about Chris Solly. How ironic that Solly’s anthem will be belted out with John Terry in the opposition dug out!
