As the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car season comes to an end this weekend at Brands Hatch Aron Smith is looking to continue his recent good form.
The Irishman who races for Airwaves Racing based in Wrotham wants to follow-up his second and third places at Silverstone with more of the same at Brands.
Speaking exclusively to Kent Sports News Aron reflected on the best weekend of his BTCC career to date.
He said: “It was a great weekend for everyone in Airwaves racing, for me it was definitely the best weekend of my career. It was unbelievable to get up on the podium twice and to get an Independents win for the team is something that means a lot to us.
“I am thrilled to bits with the weekend. We kept tweaking the car as the weekend went on and the car got better and better as each race went on.
“What we achieved in race three was really special as we obviously had the 26kg of success ballast and on the standard tyre as opposed to everyone else who was running the softs. To still be able to finish second was unbelievable as the balance really affects you at places like Silverstone.
“If we went through a lap by lap analysis of every race about a million things happen, it is always a bit frantic especially in the first part of the race. It really is a case of trying to keep your nose clean and stay out of everyone else’s issues, and that is kind of what we managed to do.
“You have to try and catch people when they are napping and that is how we started to manage to take those places and move forward.”
The season is really coming together for Airwaves at the right time and Aron is delighted to be a part of their recent success.
He added: “Everyone knows that we had a tough start to the season and that we had a year of developing to do. Now we have returned to all of the tracks that we have raced on, we have been really really strong.
“It is great because we have something to work from and that is why we are such a strong team in the second half of the season. If you look into 2014 and hopefully I will be there I think we will have a very competitive package.”
The season now moves to Brands Hatch and the team’s home race and Smith is looking forward to getting back out there again.
“Brands was really good for me last year, I got my maiden win there in the penultimate race. We are returning to our home track and it is great. We will have loads of supporters there and I think we will be a force to be reckoned with around the track.
“Especially with the bit of testing we got in beforehand with Tom Onslow-Cole it gives the team an idea of what they can run for the weekend. That will really be to our advantage throughout the weekend.
“The Brands GP circuit only opens up a few times a season and I really enjoy it, and it is a real leveller as there isn’t that much testing around the GP element of the track. The bigger names in the championship don’t have so much of an advantage around there and it is therefore that bit more of a leveller. I think that will give us a fair old crack at it.”
