Smith agrees permanent Gills deal

Gillingham have made Andy Smith their latest summer signing after the central defender sealed a permanent move to Priestfield.

The 23-year-old spent time on loan at MEMS Priestfield Stadium last season, making 12 appearances in all competitions having also enjoyed loan spells with Salford and Cheltenham and has signed a three year deal for an undisclosed fee.

He follows Sam Vokes to ME7 with the former Wycombe striker having agreed a one-year deal.

Smith came through the youth system at Hull City, joining the club in 2011, making his pro debut in 2021 in an EFL Trophy tie at home to Fleetwood Town.

In July 2022 he signed for Grimsby Town on a season-long loan, making 47 appearances and scoring three times. Last season he made one appearance for Hull before agreeing to join the Gills in early February.

On joining the club permanently, Andy said: “Ever since I knew there was a chance I could back permanently, I spoke to my agent and said I wanted to get it done straight away.

“I really enjoyed my time here last season and I am looking forward to kicking on now.”
