Two goals in injury time cost Welling United as they allowed Slough Town snatch a point at their Arbour Park ground.
Having raced into a four-one lead, Welling should have seen the game out but after conceding one, panic set in, they had a player dismissed and then suffered the injury time drama.
They could barely have got off to a better start. There were just three minutes on the clock when Welling went ahead. Chiori Johnson broke down the right wing and fired in a dangerous cross that a defender could only knock out into the path of Stefan Ilic. Just as he had done at Maidstone in their previous match, Ilic took full advantage to put the Wings ahead.
Dipo Akinyemi then went on a powerful run and found himself one on one with Jack Turner but the Slough goalkeeper managed to keep it out with his legs. At the other end Aaron Kuhl created an opportunity for Paul Hodges but he leant back and fired over before he again tried his luck but blasted wide from twenty-five yards out.
The scores were levelled in Slough’s next attack when Ryan Bird rose to head home a near post corner but Welling regained their lead four minutes later. This time an Anthony Cook cross was only partially cleared and Akinyemi fired home.
Sam Togwell chased a lost cause and pulled it back for the Rebels but Cam McGilp fired wide then Welling had another chance when Lionel Ainsworth delivered a free kick that Richie Danquah was unable to direct on target.
Reice Charles-Cook made a good save from Warren Harris who flicked a low Dan Roberts cross towards the bottom corner before Welling extended their lead. Ainsworth caught the Slough defence napping from a corner and passed to Ilic and his drive towards the far post was diverted home by Akinyemi.
Clearly buoyed Welling then started to play some good possession football and after patient build up play, Ainsworth burst through. Although his shot was blocked out, it came to Johnson who picked out Akinyemi but he could not keep his header down.
Roberts sent a curler over just before the interval but it was the visitors who went in at the break with springs in their steps.
Unfortunately, only three minutes of the second half had passed when the excellent Johnson pulled up in mid-flow with a hamstring strain and he limped off to be replaced by Rian McLean. However, two minutes later Welling extended their lead to what should have been an unassailable position. A rash tackle by Sam Togwell gave the Wings a free kick in a dangerous area. Cook stepped up and curled it over the wall leaving Turner grasping at fresh air.
Brad Quinton was then forced into his second change when a robust challenge on Kaleem Simon forced him to limp off to be replaced by Brad Ryan making his league debut.
Josh Jackman had a long shot saved easily by Charles-Cook before Ryan wriggled his way in from the right wing but although his shot took a deflection, Turner caught it comfortably.
Bird got in behind with Welling appealing for offside but Danquah got back and the off balance Slough striker hooked over. However, with twenty minutes remaining, substitute Matt Lench showed great technique to pull one back when volleying home Max Worsfold’s cross.
Cook fired in a low first time shot that went just wide then a huge kick by Charles-Cook sent Akinyemi away and he lobbed over the out-rushing Turner but Togwell got back to hack away. Akinyemi burst through once more but between Turner and Togwell, they managed to crowd him out.
Daniel Boateng and Lench then got involved in some silliness that resulted in a yellow card for each. That proved particularly costly for Boateng as a needless challenge shortly after gave the referee no choice but to show the centre back a second yellow card.
Togwell headed over a near post corner and it looked as though Welling were going to hold out but one minute into stoppage time Harris reduced the arrears to one goal difference and then in the final of the five additional minutes, Slough completed an amazing come-back as Worsfold fired home.
