It was another disappointing afternoon for Welling United as they threw away a lead to lose at Slough Town.
Twice players slipped over at crucial times and Slough profited both times.
Jack Sims was restored to the Welling starting eleven by Peter Taylor after missing Tuesday’s game with Dulwich Hamlet through injury, and he was called into the action early on when saving from Imran Kayani.
Ade Shokunbi had Welling’s first effort when surging forward but his shot went wide of the post. Aaron Barnes then attempted a curler, but it went will wide however, Welling went ahead soon after.
Brad Stevenson sent in a diagonal cross that picked out Dipo Akinyemi and he got there ahead of goalkeeper Jonathan North. Although Akinyemi’s header went over, referee Craig Sciven decreed that North had fouled the Welling striker and awarded a penalty. Akinyemi took it himself and sent North the wrong way.
Their lead was short lived as Slough levelled within three minutes. Chi Ezennolim slipped over allowing Kayani the opportunity to come in from the right. He was then allowed by the Welling defence to work across the area unchallenged before firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.
Stevenson’s cross gave Barnes a chance, but Scott Davies got back well to clear off the line. That proved crucial as Slough took the lead just before the break. This time Arthur Penney slipped over but Sims got down well to push Alfonso Tenconi’s shot around the post. Welling only half cleared the corner and it came out to Aaron Kuhl. He fell easily over Maxwell Statham’s leg and a penalty was awarded, which Kuhl converted.
Early in the second period, Slough missed a great chance to extend their lead when Lee Togwell was not picked up, but he headed over.
Barnes then sent over an excellent cross that was just beyond substitute Tom Derry, and the angle was too tight for Ezennolim to turn in as he arrived late at the far post. Then Akinyemi was unsuccessful with an outside of the foot curler that went just beyond the far post.
Tyler Goodrham had a shot that was deflected but Sims was watchful and held on well before Statham blocked a dangerous looking shot from George Hunt.
Another Welling substitute, Danny Parish, came desperately close to levelling, but his drive clattered the crossbar.
Although Welling continued to search for an equaliser, which would have been a fair reflection of the game, Kristian Campbell’s shot was blocked before Derry shot wide from twenty yards out.
Defeat for Welling, combined with results elsewhere, means that Welling are now just one place above the bottom placed club and relegation.
