The Fleet made off with the three points from Arbour Park after goals in each half from Rakish Bingham landed Dennis Kutrieb’s side their fourth away win of the season.

With new loan signing Joe Taylor taking the pre-match headlines as he went straight into the side, Bingham refused to be upstaged by slotting home his eighth and ninth goals of the season.

Taylor was one of two changes to the side, with James Dobson in as well against his old club which meant Ben Chapman and Will Wood making way.

Jack Paxman was the busiest of the red shirts early on and his snapshot was the opening action inside the first minute but it flew over Jack Turner’s crossbar.

Chris Solly was cautioned very early on, his foul in the 6th minute harshly warranting a yellow card and the former Charlton man had to be spoken to later on by the referee as well, his frustrations evident after that decision.

Paxman was almost on the end of Alfie Egan’s through ball that he threaded into the box before Adam Mekki’s low delivery had to be hastily despatched by Lee Togwell out of the six-yard box.

That was Mekki’s last action, however, as he limped off on 17 minutes following a challenge, to be replaced two minutes later by Jake Goodman. The change didn’t unduly upset Fleet’s shape as Tobi Adebayo-Rowling simply ventured further upfield to fill the gap Mekki had vacated.

What was a sedate opening quarter saw Fleet began to take control across the park and on 18 minutes, Dobson’s delivery was helped on by Bingham to the waiting Egan who got a smart effort on target and drew a good save from Turner.

Paxman continued to exert his influence and in the space of 120 seconds he swung over crosses from both sides of the pitch, the second of them setting up a promising target for Bingham who pulled his shot wide.

Slough tried to find their way back with some long-range efforts and Jordan Holmes had to clear up a couple of those out of his six-yard box before Fleet found the breakthrough.

It came on the half-hour, Adebayo-Rowling’s increasingly attacking role down the right responsible for the assist and his cross to the near post was flicked home with misleading ease but unerring accuracy by Bingham.

Adebayo-Rowling continued to trouble the Slough full-back and he supplied Joe Taylor for a diving header that arrowed wide of the post. Taylor almost had sight of a debut goal, put clean through by Bingham after a defensive error but his run was just too quick and the flag went up.

The home side pressed higher up the pitch in the second half as they sought an equaliser and the second period lacked the fluency of the first. Namesakes Warren and Ben Harris prowled the Fleet back line looking for an opening but the visitors were determined to keep a clean sheet and were well organised in breaking up Slough’s sporadic pressure.

Goodman twice got in good blocks with his leg and then his head and when Slough did get it on target, such as Ben Harris’ close range header from a cross on 57 minutes, Holmes was alert to the danger.

And Holmes made an even better save four minutes later when Norwich City loanee Louis Lomas flashed a shot across goal from the left and the Fleet keeper flung himself at it to palm it away for the game’s first corner.

Slough made a trio of forward-minded substitutions as they continued to edge the Fleet back and their best chance of the equaliser came 10 minutes from time. A high delivery from the right was aimed to sub Dan Roberts at the far post and his downward header was firm and on target but was blocked by Goodman and then Holmes at the foot of the upright.

Those chances aside, however, Fleet were assured in defence and capable on the counterattack. A great run by Bingham failed by mere inches to release substitute Michael West in on goal… but there was no stopping Bingham’s pursuit of goal number two.

It arrived six minutes from the end. From a throw-in down the Fleet right, Bingham’s strength took him infield, holding off a Slough defender before finding Dobson wide on the left. The former Rebels winger returned the ball back into the middle and there was Bingham to confidently despatch his second of the evening.

That was the game done and dusted but there was still time for one last talking point. As Solly carried the ball over the halfway line, Aaron Kuhl – who up to that point had been Slough’s most assured performer in midfield – came sliding in low with a poor challenge and the referee had no hesitation in reaching for a red card.

Solly required some lengthy treatment but returned to the fray for the final minutes as Fleet enjoyed their first win ever in five attempts at Slough.
