Jason Kenny OBE has become a favourite household name as a result of his three gold wins at the Rio Olympic velodrome earlier this month.
Soon after his return from the successful games, the six-time Olympic champion will be seen on another world-class circuit – this time Brands Hatch – as he takes part in Revolve 24, the 24 hour cycling endurance race in Kent on 10-11 September 2016.
Revolve 24 was launched with great success in 2015 with Jason Kenny as event ambassador. Jason enjoyed the event so much that this year he is riding as a normal participant, just for fun, with family.
Speaking to Brands Hatch team at the Radical Challenge Championship in last week, Jason said: “We rode round the circuit and it was hard work to be fair! It will be a laugh – it’s just with my dad and uncle. We’ll do the full thing, just because we want to; it’s a good challenge, so we’ll see how we go.
“Rio was amazing and the speed of change after it all; you have such a definite plan for so long and you take that plan away and you’re left not really knowing what to do with yourself, so things like this are a good distraction, it’s still competing and just having a laugh as well.”
He continues: “Brands Hatch is the best course for this event as you don’t have any of the dangers of the road. It has a lot of interesting undulations, especially as you get out into the forest. It’ll be a real challenge for people as they ride through the night, lighting their own way.”
The 24hr event is open to soloists, duos and teams of four, six and eight riders. There is a 6-hour relay and a track-based 12hr “Dusk ‘til Dawn’ challenge. On Saturday 10 September there will also be a British Cycling One Day Men and Women’s Omnium (Regional A). Taking place on the world-class GP and Indy circuits the event is a fun and competitive way to end the road-racing season. The Omnium consists of three events:
- Individual Time Trial 1 Lap of the GP circuit (3.8 km per lap)
- Criterium 24 Minutes plus 2 Laps around the Indy Circuit (1.19 km per lap)
- Road Race 2 Hours Road Race on the GP circuit
Revolve24’s Race Director, Simon Lillistone is a former pro cyclist, two-times Olympian and delivered the cycling events at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. He says: “Revolve24 offers the ultimate challenge in world-class racing circuits around the world. The riding can be as challenging, as competitive, or simply as fun as you want it to be.”
