Sittingbourne vs Tooting preview

It’s FA Trophy time again on Saturday and Sittingbourne face Tooting & Mitcham in what promises to be the biggest game of the season so far.

Sittingbourne go into the match full of form and unbeaten over 90 minutes in each of their last five matches.

And they’ve already beaten two teams from Tooting’s league, the South Central Division of the BetVictor Isthmian League, in home cup matches this season.

But Uxbridge and South Park, knocked out of the FA Cup and FA Trophy respectively by Sittingbourne, are both mid-table in that division whereas Tooting are unbeaten and top of the table.

Consequently it will be tough but Sittingbourne have nothing to fear, and their record in cup games this season is impressive, losing just once in seven games if you exclude penalty shoot-outs.

Anyone who saw their astonishing first half performance at Phoenix Sports on Tuesday in the Velocity Trophy will know that they’re red-hot at the moment.

They scored four goals in 20 minutes but on top of that they carved out another eight or so excellent chances which were either saved by the keeper or sailed narrowly wide.

They eventually won the game 4-2 but it was quite a performance, particularly as manager Chris Lynch took the opportunity to rest a few of his regulars for that match.

That’s the good news, but the bad news is two of their most important players, goalkeeper Tom Benham and top scorer Johan Caney-Bryan, suffered ankle injuries in last Saturday’s 1-0 league win over Hythe Town and will miss the Tooting game.

The Hythe game was an important win for Sittingbourne, their first home success in the league this season and in front of their largest home attendance.

Hythe have some good players at this level but a youthful Sittingbourne side out-ran them and out-played them for endeavour, and vitally held out to win the game after their disappointing early-season habit of losing points late in matches.

Several Sittingbourne players have taken the first few weeks of the season to run into top form, but players like Kane Phillip and Tom Fagg are on fire at the moment, and in Josh Oliver Sittingbourne have unearthed a hugely promising talent.

While Sittingbourne were beating Hythe last Saturday, Tooting were drawing 1-1 with FC Romania but they still top their table with five wins, three draws and no losses so far.

They’ve lost in cup competitions, though, getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Poole Town and drawing 1-1 with Chipstead on Tuesday night in the Velocity Trophy, losing the penalty shoot-out.

Sittingbourne and Tooting have met many times previously when they were in the same division, Tooting doing the double over them a couple of seasons back when they were on their way to winning the league with 105 points.

Saturday promises to be a game to remember between two teams enjoying their football and hoping to be on their way to having seasons to remember.

For anyone who wants to see the game, Sittingbourne’s ground is at Woodstock Park off Broad Oak Road, postcode ME9 8AG.
