There’s no time for Sittingbourne to rest on their laurels after enjoying their first win under manager Chris Lynch on Saturday.
They’re back in action on Tuesday night when the visitors are in-form Ashford United, who moved up to second in the Bostik South East League with a fifth successive win on Saturday.
While Sittingbourne were winning an exciting game at Phoenix, Ashford were beating Sevenoaks 2-1 after scoring twice in the first 10 minutes.
Like Ashford, Sittingbourne sailed into a two-goal first half lead, Tommie Fagg and Roman Campbell getting the goals. Campbell fired in his second only for Phoenix to mount a comeback and level the scores at 3-3.
Substitute Johan Caney-Bryan got the winner with his first league goal for the club having scored previously in a couple of cup competitions.
For Campbell that made it three goals in three games since arriving on work experience from Gillingham and he was within inches of a hat-trick when a powerful shot early in the second half beat the keeper but hit the post.
Sittingbourne’s plans for the match were disrupted when young central defender Joshua Spencer suffered a knee injury in the warm-up, so with Lex Allan and Ben Fitchett still out, that meant all three first choice centre-halves were missing.
An attacking midfielder – Fagg – and a left-back – Jack Morrell – took on the unfamiliar roles and both did very well in what was an excellent spirited team performance.
Delighted manager Lynch said: “The last three games have shown a complete new belief, a new style and system and some great, entertaining football being produced. I said we would battle, we would play attractive, entertaining, attacking football and we would get out of this situation.”
Phoenix generously tweeted after the game: “Congratulations to Sittingbourne who came out best in a seven-goal thriller.”
The victory, Sittingbourne’s first this year, took the team up to 16th in the league but they’ve still got plenty of work to do to pull away from the relegation scrap at the foot of the league. Thamesmead Town have already taken one of the relegation spots, but there’s still another one to be filled.
Tuesday night’s opponents Ashford have been flying under the management of ex-Sittingbourne player Tommy Warrilow, but are still 13 points behind runaway leaders Cray Wanderers.
Sittingbourne and Ashford are old rivals and have already met this season, drawing 1-1 back in September with Fagg on target for the Brickies with one of the best goals this season.
Sittingbourne and Ashford drew 0-0 last season when the teams met at Woodstock, with Ashford winning the return match 3-1 on Boxing Day.
Chris Webber got the goal that day with a memorable shot from distance – at least Sittingbourne have stunned Ashford with a couple of terrific goals in their recent encounters.
