Sittingbourne boss Nick Davis is under no illusion at just how important Saturday’s FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tie against Spartan League side Hoddesdon Town.
“This club needs all the prize money that we’re winning at the moment,” the Brickies player boss admitted speaking to KSN after his side’s stunning late win in the previous round against the Met Police.
“That night was easily the biggest night of my managerial career, but’s been a fantastic couple of weeks for us hasn’t it? My players are literally pulling up trees for me at the minute – they’re young and learning and I’d love us to be able to put four or five of them on very long term contracts. We’re trying to compete on all fronts and play football – they’re fearless!”
“I said at the end of last year that we’d got a good bunch when we lost one game in twelve! We missed a few in the opening two games but since then we’ve been on an amazing run!”
Sadly for the Brickies that run came to an end in an injury time defeat to high flying Dorking Wanderers last Tuesday.
“It’s tremendous for me having the youngsters around me at the back. After having played five and a half to six hundred games like I have, it’s a joy to have them around me.”
“They’re terrific – they listen to me, and to be fair I listen to them and the results have come. But I’ve been told that we look a better side when I’m in it so I guess that’s got something to do with experience, and let’s face it, you can’t beat experience!”
“And these days experience like mine costs money to bring in. Anyhow, I’ve had to play as it seems to be centre half’s that we’ve been missing”
“We’re facing a massive game in the next round – for a club like ours (who didn’t win any money in the Cup last year) another win could mean some big money coming in and I can’t emphasise just how big that is for us.”
“We don’t want to look too far ahead, but with the biggest respect in the world, we’re playing a team next from a League below – OK it’s never a given and we could have had a Conference South side here, but they’re mid table in their League which probably makes us odds on favourite which is such a dangerous position to be in.”
“We had them watched at Cockfosters last weekend, but at the moment the prize money is the priority for this club – we’ve lost some players over the past couple of weeks, but I’m hoping that most of them will meet the carrot of playing in the FA Cup, and who knows?”
