Sittingbourne 7-0 Ramsgate
Sittingbourne 7-0 Ramsgate

What an end to the decade for the Brickies, after what looks like a record win for the Brickies in a competitive game, certainly the biggest win since 1996.

This victory for Sittingbourne follows a comparatively lean time with just one win from the last four matches.

Starting for the Brickies for the first time was Gillingham loan player James Witt who had an excellent game, as so many others did, Johan Caney-Bryan also returned to the starting line up after a period out injured.

Ramsgate’s team included ex Brickies Harry Brooks, Kane Rowlands and Joseph Denny who signed from Sevenoaks Town and made his debut in this game. Surprisingly Gillingham loanee Roman Campbell, who played so well for Sittingbourne when playing for them; was surprisingly missing from the Rams line up in what would have been his last game on loan to them.

The first half was a tame affair compared to the second. Ramsgate had the better of the early exchanges and could have taken the lead if it wasn’t for a couple of fine saves from Brickies keeper Jordan Perrin.

Sittingbourne were losing the battle in the middle of the park in these early exchanges and they had to wait until 20 minutes before the Rams goal was threatened when a Tom Fagg free kick was tipped over the bar by Brooks.

At the other end a good run by Ashley Miller caused havoc in the Brickies penalty area with shots being blocked a number of times, this was to be the closest that the Rams got to scoring.

Sittingbourne then began to play some good football and a wonderful diagonal pass from Fagg found Witt who surged forward and put himself in a great position to  fire in a shot but he sent his effort sailing over the bar.

Half time was approaching when Kane Phillip raced down the right and fired in a powerful shot that just missed the far post. A minute later Phillip repeated the run but this time crossed the ball into a crowded area where Caney-Bryan beat everyone to the ball and headed it firmly into the net to give the Brickies the lead.

The second half was just two minutes old when Sittingbourne doubled their lead, a through ball by Witt found Caney-Bryan who made no mistake with his shot. The Rams visibly wilted and a powerful run on 52 minutes down the middle by Fagg ended in his shot curling wide.  Harry Taylor joined the fray, replacing Phillip on 50 minutes and he had only been on the pitch for three minutes when he struck a sweet shot past Brooks to make it 3-0.

Ten minutes later it was four as a hopeful shot bounced off a defender, the ball going to Chris Barnard who controlled the ball beautifully to set himself up for a shot that found the back of the net.

If things weren’t already bad for the Rams they got even worse when petulance by Rams player Jude Arthurs on 70 minutes caused him to receive a red card for lashing out at a Sittingbourne player.

There was no way back for the Rams and it was all Sittingbourne now. There were holes all through the Rams defence and Tom Fagg took full advantage on 71 minutes to surge down the middle of the pitch and he let fly from about twenty five yards with a shot that gave Brooks no chance, and it was now 5-0.

The sixth goal came with three minutes of normal time left and was really down to brilliant play by young Samuel Stace who weaved round the Rams defence before he shot, the ball broke loose and Barnard latched onto it only to be hacked down in the area. Stace took the penalty which gave Brooks no chance.

With just a minute left Barnard struck the seventh with a coolly taken shot.

With this victory Sittingbourne move up to 12th in the league whilst the Rams remain second from bottom, 6 points ahead of East Grinstead Town but Town have four games in hand.
