A solitary first half strike from Warren Mfula proved enough for Faversham Town to take the Bob Amor Trophy back down the A2 to Salters Lane on Tuesday evening leaving Sittingbourne asking what might or even should have been.
The Trophy which the Brickies regained at the end of last season when substitute Harrison Pont saved Bayo Akinfenwa’s penalty in the two side’s last Isthmian League meeting before Faversham’s relegation to SCEFL, was regained by Sammy Moore’s side in the early stages of a balmy night at Woodstock Park where very little went right for the home side.
Mfula turned the ball home in the 13th minute as the visitors enjoyed their best period of the game as he converted past Harry Brookes in the home goal.
Things continued to go against the Brickies shortly afterwards as striker Chris Harris hobbled off after a heavy challenge.
The second half saw Sittingbourne enjoy a lot of the ball as Ryan Maxwell’s side probed for a way through. One of the home side’s “new” boys, Gabby Piorkowski, went close with a great free kick which Ashley Vose did brilliantly to turn aside.
Shortly afterwards the keeper so nearly went from hero to villain as his scuffed clearance under pressure fell straight to Alfie Bloomfield, whose first time chip towards the empty net just didn’t dip enough for the home side and clipped the top of a very relieved keeper’s bar.
Sittingbourne kept pressing but just couldnt find a way through and the Trophy was back in Faversham hands as the two sides both prepare to face Isthmian Premier sides this weekend as the Brickies head for Hartsdown Park to face Margate whilst Faversham return home to welcome Folkestone Invicta.
