In the fourth round of BRDC Formula 3 competition at Donington Park, 16-year-old Kiern Jewiss picked up his second podium finish of the season, to go with two more points-scoring finishes to bring home a strong haul of championship points.

Heading into Saturday’s qualifying session, Kiern was looking to replicate his rapid times from Friday’s test day, where he topped the timesheets in two of four sessions.

However, qualifying at the 2.5-mile Derbyshire circuit, did not bring the same success for the FM Conway-sponsored driver. His best time of 1:25.405s, secured eighth position on the grid for the race one, with his second fastest time was enough to put him sixth for the final race of the weekend.

RACE ONE
STARTED P8, FINISHED P3

Kiern had shown excellent race pace in the previous rounds, and the first race at Donington was no exception. In the opening lap, he charged from eighth to an impressive fourth, and in the process performed an opportunistic move past two competitors at the Fogarty Esses.

From there Kiern kept his race clean – staying out of trouble while lapping consistently to ensure that he would collect a significant number of championship points for his efforts.

As the chequered flag was waved, Kiern crossed the line in fourth, just over a second behind Kaylen Frederick. However, due to a penalty handed to Kaylen Frederick, Kiern was promoted to third position, making his hard work taste that little bit sweeter, being rewarded with third place finish.

RACE TWO
STARTED P12, FINISHED P10

The second race provided a tough challenge for the Morgan Bros-sponsored driver with Kiern coming home to take the final point on offer.

A coming together with Kaylen Fredericks on the opening lap saw Kiern suffer bodywork damage. He was forced to pit to repair the damage, which left him trailing the rest of the field when he returned to the track.

From there, Kiern pushed hard to cut the margin between him and the rest of the runners. With just two laps to go, Kiern moved up to 10 to put him in the top-10.

RACE THREE
STARTED P5, FINISHED P6

After a mixed weekend, Kiern was hoping to have good fortune in the final race of the weekend. The hard work paid its due and Kiern came home in sixth position to add to his points tally for the weekend. Experiencing a clean race, Kiern kept his head down to put in a mature performance. His efforts were rewarded and along with the points.

“It has been another roller-coaster of a weekend to be honest. Qualifying was tough for us and there was pace lacking in the final sector which prohibited us from putting ourselves further up the grid.” said Kiern

“Race one was better – the speed was there and it was good to have a clean race. I wish that I could say the same for race two, but it wasn’t meant to be. Despite the result, I’m still happy to have scored a point in such tough circumstances. The final race went as expected – I just pushed and stayed out of trouble to get the most amount of points that I could.”
