Airwaves Racing will be targeting silverware at the Home of British Motorsport this weekend in the penultimate round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
They are back in action and in fine form as the BTCC reconvenes following a three week break. Round 8 produced a unique set of challenges at Rockingham but the Motorbase-run squad came away from the oval circuit in a strong position having bagged a lucrative point’s haul from each of Sunday’s races that included four top ten finishes.
The Kent-based outfit heads to the iconic Silverstone circuit with the enviable accolade of being the only team in the championship to have its 100% finishing record still in-tact. The consistency and race pace shown by the team this season sees Mat Jackson sitting in second place in the Independent Drivers’ Standings with the 33 year-old being the only driver to have scored points in every race so far this season.
With its super-fast long straights, the Silverstone National circuit layout is a firm favourite on the BTCC calendar and one which has traditionally suited the Mountune-powered Ford Focus ST well. Both Mat and his Airwaves Racing team-mate, double BTCC champion Fabrizio Giovanardi, have had plenty of success here over the years and notably it was here where Mat piloted the newly built NGTC Ford Focus ST to its stunning maiden race victory in 2012. With an on form Airwaves Racing squad looking to close the gap on the Independents’ standings as the season enters its final stages, David Bartrum’s squad remains steadfast in its efforts to keep the pressure firmly on the current leaders until the final flag drops.
Speaking ahead of the penultimate round, Team Manager Oly Collins, said: “Historically Silverstone has been a good circuit for us and the Focus ST. We got our first NGTC win here and had another good weekend here last year. We’re confident the changes we’ve made throughout the season and from our recent test at Snetterton should translate well to the Silverstone circuit.
“I don’t think we can catch Colin Turkington and WSR in the Championship unless he has an absolute shocker of weekend but we’ll be going all out to get the best results we possibly can. Clearly the RWD car seems to have an advantage over FWD based on the past 5 race meetings results, but take nothing away from Colin he’s a class act. Silverstone should suit the Focus, so now we’re just aiming for some more silverware at Silverstone and Brands and hope to end the season on a high.”
Round 9 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship takes place at Silverstone circuit on September 27/28. Live coverage of Sunday’s events will be shown on ITV4, itv.com and also in HD from 11.15am – 6pm; with itv.com featuring live streaming online of Saturday’s qualifying session between 3.45 and 4.15pm.
