Following the announcement of Steve King as manager of Welling United, and the four signings that were unveiled on the same day, the club’s supporters have had to wait patiently for further player news.
Rather like London Buses, a long wait was ended with a flurry of activity as five new signings were unveiled.
Anthony Acheampong
Fans favourite Anthony Acheampong returns for his third spell for the club at the heart of the defence. He had an excellent loan period last season and the manager at the time, Jamie Coyle, was disappointed when Dulwich Hamlet recalled him.
Nassim L’Ghoul
Last season, Nassim L’Ghoul was key to the improved performances and results of Whitehawk after a calamitous start to the campaign. He tore Welling apart when the two clubs met in April and left an impression on the supporters who travelled that day.
Richard Orlu
Although captain of Woking last season, Welling supporters will know Richard Orlu mainly as a Dover Athletic player having been at the Crabble for the previous four seasons. Prior clubs for the centre half include Canvey Island, Farnborough and Staines Town.
Gavin McCallum
Another former opponent (he scored in Eastbourne Borough’s 7-3 victory over Welling two seasons ago), Gavin McCallum has spent the last four seasons at the south coast club. Previously, his clubs have included Woking, Barnet, Lincoln City, Hereford United and Weymouth.
John Paul Kissock
Former Everton schoolboy footballer John Paul Kissock may be remembered by Welling supporters as an Ebbsfleet United player however he has played for a number of clubs between leaving Everton and signing for the Wings. After leaving Goodison Park, he had a spell in Scotland before signing for Southport. He then went on to play for Luton Town, Macclesfield Town (under King), Whitehawk, Ebbsfleet and then back to Southport.
On the Welling United website there is confirmation that Archie Johnson, the clubs’ longest serving player, has been retained bringing Welling’s current squad up to fourteen. King looks to sign further additions soon as he looks to have the core of his squad in place before the pre-season friendlies start.
