Kent seamer Charlie Shreck believes the side have a good crop of young players coming through to bolster the bowling attack.

Shreck has had an impressive season after signing from Nottinghamshire in the winter, leading the Division Two County Championship bowling chart after taking 48 wickets at an average of just 23.54 runs per wicket.

The 34 year old has sent down almost 400 overs for the side in the longer form of the game, missed the entire Twenty 20 Cup and as yet has been surplus to requirements in the CB40 competition.

Despite only playing four day cricket, Shreck still has a hunger to play in all forms of cricket for Kent, but told KSN how he may have benefited from a rest earlier in the summer:

“One of the main reasons for coming to Kent was that I wanted to play cricket. Having that opportunity to play all the time and bowl all the time gets you into a nice rhythm.”

“I’m not saying that I’m bowling the best I ever have, but there’s a level of consistancy I’ve been trying to get in playing and bowling that has come through.”

“There was initial disappointment at not being picked for T20’s and CB40 games, but then you take the other side of it and I had a nice four to five weeks rest giving me the chance to come all guns blazing in the latter part of the season.”

“I feel fresh enough to be able to do that and that was then the right decision.”

Along with Mark Davies and Matt Coles. Shreck has former a three pronged seam attack throughout the majority of this season, taking 114 Championship wickets between them and the former Notts man believes they compliment one another really well:

“We all have our own particular styles and we’re all working towards the same plan, but we’ve all got different methods of getting that way.”

“I think Matt Coles has learnt a lot from me and Mark and I’ve learnt from both of those two. I’d assume Mark has learnt from us, so it’s been all very good.”

“When one of us isn’t on song, the other two step up and that’s what creates a winning team.”

For Shreck, one of the key ingredients this season has been how happy the dressing room is and the 34 year old explained it can go a long way to making the side successful:

“There were rumours last year that it wasn’t quite as much fun. We’ve got quite an old experienced team now and I’m not daying they’re in the twilight of their careers, but we are in an age where we know our games well enough to enjoy and appreciate we are playing professional cricket.”

“We’ve got a purpose and we’re not trying to prove anything anymore. We’re out there having fun and I think that comes across.”

Living at the cricket ground whilst he is at Canterbury has proved to be a different way of life for Shreck along with Mike Powell and Ben Harmison, but the bowler insists it has been good for team morale:

“Living above Sainsburys means you have to have quite a bit of willpower! We have our own little community and then we’ve got Mark Davies over the road too.”

“It’s almost as if we are back at boarding school, without the headmaster looking down upon you!”

One player that has impressed Shreck since joining Kent has been Ivan Thomas with the seamer much alike in more ways than one:

“We share the same type of hair, but for me the one thing that really stands out about Ivan, apart from his cricketing skills as he is able to bowl over and over again in the same spot, is his attitude to the game.”

“That makes him stand out a little bit more than some of the other youngsters around the country. He is really polite, but wants to do really well, much like Daniel Bell-Drummond, but with a focus and determination that he has got after believing he didn’t really believe he belonged here.”

It’s not just Thomas that has impressed Shreck either and he feels Kent have got a bright crop of youngsters coming through the system:

“You’ve got both Adam Ball and Adam Riley coming through too. Sam Northeast has got a bright future for his age and Ashley Shaw could do well too.”

“We’ve got that young crop of guys that are coming to an age where they can produce good first class performances day in, day out.”

“Along with the likes of Fabian Cowdrey, Sam Billings, Bell-Drummond and Alex Blake, it looks like we will have a great side for years to come.”

Shreck was signed prior to the appointment of Jimmy Adams as Head Coach and the bowler believes he has been instrumental in the side challenging at the top end of the table in both Championship and CB40 cricket this season:

“I wouldn’t describe Jimmy as laid back, I’d say he is clinical. He doesn’t give much away and he doesn’t get angry or sad. He has a very even decision making process. Outiside of the game he has a laugh and a bit of fun, but during the critical times he makes the right decisions.”

“He’s played twenty years of professional cricket and captained the West Indies with people like Brian Lara in his team, so he commands a certain amount of respect.”

“He has a certain way of getting the best out of you without throwing hissy fits, without raising his voice or getting angry. He has a way and demeanour about him that demands respect and the right answer
