Sheppey United 0-0 Sittingbourne

Sheppey United and Sittingbourne shared the spoils in the second Swale-Ico of the season as the two played out an Easter Monday stalemate.

For the visitors it was more frustrating as they created far more opportunities with their much-changed side with one eye on next week’s Play Offs than the home side as the Brickies topped up League point number one hundred in their vain pursuit of Champions Ramsgate.

The Brickies bossed the game totally, but couldn’t find the decisive touch and when they did home keeper Aidan Prall had an excellent afternoon between the sticks.

The keeper raced from his goal after around fifteen minutes to hack clear from Mitch May as the Brickies top scorer threatened, before having to leap high to claw the ball off the head of Jean-Baptiste Fischer who was trying to get onto Chris Arthur’s touch on from Richie Hamill’s corner.

Fischer went close again on the half hour – flinging himself at May’s nod down – before Joe Boachie’s drive was superbly beaten out by the Sheppey stopper.

Ade Azeez replaced May at the break and within minutes of his arrival, the big striker forced Prall into a terrific block with his right boot. The one-way traffic with clear chances continued as Prall made a magical save to tip over a drive from Henry Sinai before making a really brave save at the feet of Boachie.

The closest either side came to a winner came eighteen minutes from time when Hamill’s clipped free kick was met by a stooping Fischer header that beat Prall and smacked back off the keeper’s left post.

In the last ten minutes the Brickies had loud penalty shouts when Antonio Morgan’s shot – after a fine run – seemed to strike a Sheppey hand, but referee Donnelly wasn’t interested.

Such was the Brickies domination in the second period that the home side won their first corner of the half in the penultimate minute, yet there was still time for the Brickies – through Fischer again – to go close with a drive that whistled past a statuesque Prall’s left post.

A point each then and the point that as we said takes Sittingbourne onto one hundred points for the season for just the second time in their history and Ryan Maxwell will have been pleased to get more time into his player’s legs ahead of Merstham’s visit to the Staxson Stadium Woodstock next Tuesday and the Play Off semi-finals.
