Johann Gudmundsson is reported to be on the radar of several Premier League clubs and, according to Sunday’s Football League Paper, he has no chance of reaching the Premier League with Charlton.
The club’s objective is to return to the Premier League and the nature of the Championship makes that possible. A glance at the upper reaches of the current table reveals some surprising names there. Bournemouth may well come to The Valley on the final day of the season looking to clinch automatic promotion.
Gudmundsson is happy at The Valley and preliminary talks have already taken place about extending his deal, which expires at the end of next season.
The Addicks beat off the attention of eight other clubs to secure the Icelander’s signature last summer.
Gudmundsson is naturally ambitious, but if he is confident that Charlton are looking to move forward, there is no reason why a longer deal can not be agreed.
Joe Gomez is another attracting attention, with Arsenal being mentioned as his possible destination.
Gomez is hugely talented and looks destined for the top. He is a likeable and sensible lad who is both surprised and delighted with the amount of first team game time that he has had this season.
Gomez is on the longest contract that a player of his age can sign and he is keen to continue playing regular first team football. It would be a surprise if he is not still at The Valley next season.
The Addicks travel to Hillsborough on Saturday for a the ultimate mid-table clash, Charlton sit one place above Sheffield Wednesday in eleventh position.
The Owls have a poor home record of recent times, winning just one of their last eight games at Hillsborough.
Guy Luzon will have Chris Solly and Yoni Buyens available after suspension and may choose to freshen his team up a little.
Stephen Henderson will continue in goal and Solly is likely to return at right-back. Morgan Fox has been in good form of late and may again confine Rhoys Wiggins to the bench.
Roger Johnson has played a lot of games recently – after a lengthy period without action at Wolves – and Luzon may consider resting him.
Joe Gomez is another who could be given a breather. Tal Ben Haim and Andre Bikey are both available, and with Buyens available again, Alou Diarra could also be used as a central defender.
Johann Gudmundsson, Jordan Cousins and Yoni Buyens are likely to start with either Frederic Bulot or Chris Eagles completing the midfield quartet.
Igor Vetokele’s persistent Achilles problem seems to have taken the edge off his game and Luzon may opt to rest him play either Eagles or Simon Church up front with Tony Watt.
Charlton could look like this:
Henderson; Solly, Ben Haim, Johnson, Wiggins; Gudmundsson, Cousins, Buyens, Bulot; Watt, Eagles.
Subs: Dmitrovic, Gomez, Wiggins, Bikey, Diarra, Lepoint, Church.
Darren Bond will cross the Pennines to take charge of the match.
With neither side having anything to play for, it is unlikely to be spectacular. Stuart Gray and Luzon will have to work hard to keep their players focused.
The visiting fans will have happy memories of this game, in the corresponding fixture last season, Marvin Sordell notched a hat-trick.
The Addicks will be hoping to continue with their recent run of good results at Hillsborough.
