SCEFL weekend round up

There were massive games at the top of both SCEFL divisions on Saturday when the weather did not affect the schedule as much as in higher divisions.

The big game in the Premier Division was of course at Salters Lane, Faversham, where the top two met, and it was Glebe who went clear at the top of the pile as second half goals from Jamie Philpot – his eighteenth goal of the season putting the visitors ahead – with the win sealed as Reece Barrett netted the second to take Glebe four points clear of their hosts at the top of the table.

None of the other challengers played League football as two of the three outstanding Senior trophy Quarter Finals were played. Lordswood took the lead against Larkfield & New Hythe through Callum Peck only for the Division One side to follow up their hugely impressive win over Corinthian in the previous round by stunning Nicky Southall’s side and running out 4-1 winners’ courtesy of goals from Taylor Ibe’s brace and further goals from Matt Day and Kwasi Amoah.

They were joined in the last four by Whitstable who needed extra time to edge past Faversham Strike Force 3-1. And indeed a shock was well and truly on when Marshall Wratten put the visitors in front, but Manny Oloyede’s goal forced extra time and two goals in the last minute of the first period from Liam Gillies and Josh Williams sent the Oystermen into the last four – so far the only Premier Division side through although they will be joined by either Erith Town or Snodland Town who play in the last Quarter Final.

In the league Stanfeld moved off the bottom with a come from behind win over Welling Town courtesy of strikes by Mayo Olufeko and Tommy Whitnell after Billy Robins’ goal as Town sink to the foot of the table albeit “only” on goal difference from Rusthall and Kennington, who were beaten at VCD by Michael Fenn’s double.

With games in hand, Lydd Town kept on the coat tails of the Play Off places by winning 2-1 at Holmesdale who led through a Scott Bayford penalty. But two goals in a minute from Troy Howard and former Dover boss Mitch Brundle in the final quarter of an hour gave the visitors the points.

What proved to be Scott Porter’s last game in charge at Hollands & Blair saw the Gillingham side beat Sutton Athletic with Harvey Welford’s first half goal. After the game, the club announced on its website that Porter and his coaching side had left the club.

In Division One AFC Whyteleafe remain top after a 2-2 draw with Rochester United who slip to third with Lewisham Borough’s late 2-1 win over K Sports. Staplehurst Monarchs won 2-1 at Bridon Ropes to go fourth above Trophy Semi Finalists Larkfield who drop to fifth and the last Play Off place.
