Jack Sales is absolutely loving his season’s racing in the Caterham Roadsport Championship and he underlined his talents last time out.
He took victory in both races at his home track of Brands Hatch, leaving him just one point off the summit.
Speaking to Kent Sports News, Jack said: “Yes I am really enjoying the season; I don’t want it to end to be honest! Yes I have now had seven consecutive podiums, after having a slow start to the year being outside the top six in the first three races; due in part to a crash, and in part to driving like a numpty! I’m glad I got my act together!”
It is a remarkable recovery for Sales to be right up there having had such a poor start to the season by his high standards, and now he is ready to go for the title.
He added: “I am equal top on fastest laps with Chris Hutchinson, who leads me by one point (before dropped scores) in the championship, so I suppose it shows that I have the fundamental pace to be up the sharp end. I felt really good in the car at Rockingham, where I got pole and fastest lap in both races.
“I would say that was the best I have felt in and the best I have driven the car since getting it. In hindsight, I didn’t quite get the best out of the car at Brands in terms of lap time, but thankfully managed to get the results!
“I am now back in contention, yes. After the third race, I think I was 16 points off the lead of the championship, which is quite a lot in Caterhams as the points difference between positions is so small (in F1 it’s 25 points for a win, 18 for second, 15 for third etc., whereas in Caterhams it’s 25 for a win, 23 for second, 22 for third etc.), it’s very difficult to make up ground.
“I am therefore very pleased, and a little surprised, to be so close to the lead being just one point away! Third place in the championship is in turn only one point behind me, so it really couldn’t be much closer… It’s going to be a nail-biting last round!”
Moving on to Brands Hatch, Jack was delighted to be able to take victory in both races at his home track in front of his friends and family.
“Being my local track, Brands really was the perfect place for me to take my first double win; especially in front of family and friends. I had a really good day on Friday testing and had high hopes for the weekend. Qualifying went Ok, I qualified third, but only 27 thousandths of a second off pole!
“In race one on Saturday I made a reasonable start, but got boxed in on the first lap and dropped down to fourth. I managed to get third at the start of lap two going into Paddock Hill and managed to take the lead a lap later at Paddock, having got an unbelievable slipstream as the two leaders were side by side coming out of Clark curve coming onto the main straight, so I got a good run and got a massive tow; I managed to go half a car length ahead going into the braking zone into paddock and somehow managed to shut my eyes and hold on round the outside to take the lead.
“I then managed to break the tow and win my just over two seconds. This put me on pole for the race on Sunday. I made a great start and made a break – getting around a second lead. On around lap five, the safety car came out due to an incident at Druids. When the race got going again, I managed to make a cracking restart and get a good gap straight away. However, some of the fluid spilt in the incident wasn’t cleared up, so the safety car came out again a couple of laps later! Unfortunately for me, everyone stayed with me on the restart! Me and the championship leader Chris Hutchinson had a great battle for the lead, and I managed to hold on to take my first double-win… needless to say I was absolutely chuffed.”
Jack is itching to get back on track and head to the final two rounds of the season and make sure he is competitive in those races.
He said: “I can’t wait to get back out there! I have never been to Croft, and I know a couple of the quick guys have done some testing up there so I know it’s going to be tougher than ever to get a good result! And then there is Silverstone of course; we will be on the International configuration again, like last year, which utilises the fantastic F1 ‘Wing’ pit complex. That will be rather an unpredictable round too due to it being slipstream city with the hangar straight, but I can’t wait.”
