Charlton ended their long run without a win in emphatic fashion at Rotherham’s New York Stadium on Saturday.
The Addicks won 4-1, with two goals in each half, Simon Makienok with a brace, Igor Vetokele and substitute, Ademola Lookman, scoring the goals.
No trip to Rotherham is complete without a visit to Millmoor. The Millers’ former home has a sports covenant on it, so it can not be pulled down.
The stadium is intact, and the pitch is perfect, the grass is tended as though football was still being played on it.
Attempts to tempt Rotherham’s rugby union club to Millmoor have thus far failed, and bids to introduce speedway and greyhound racing have also been unsuccessful.
The New York Stadium is built on the site of Guest & Chrimes factory complex. The derelict factory – that produced fire hydrants for the streets of New York – is still standing. The rest of the site is a mix of undeveloped land and a car park for the football club.
Both Ricardo Vaz Te and Patrick Bauer travelled with the squad, and watched the action from the stands.
Simon Makienok came in for Tony Watt, with fit-again Ademola Lookman taking Makienok’s place on the bench.
The hosts included former Addicks, Frazer Richardson and Richard Wood, on the bench.
Charlton came flying out of the blocks, and had their noses in front inside the first five minutes.
Makienok’s header sent Zakaraya Bergdich scampering down the left. The midfielder’s pass was met by Makienok just inside the box. His low drive gave Lee Camp no chance.
The lead lasted just seven minutes. Sloppy defending on the Addicks’ right allowed the ball to be played across to Chris Burke, who restored parity for Rotherham on his home debut.
The two teams slugged it out for the rest of the half, and it looked like they would go into the break on level terms.
But a minute before the interval, Johann Berg Gudmundsson broke down the right, and played the ball across for Igor Vetokele to slide the ball home from six yards.
It was the Angolan’s first league goal since he scored at Wigan last February.
Midway through the second period, the visitors extended their lead. Johnnie Jackson’s free-kick was expertly tipped over the bar by Lee Camp.
The respite was short lived though. From the resultant corner, Gudmundsson picked out Makienok, who thundered in an unstoppable header.
Charlton do like to put their fans through mental torture though. Two minutes after opening up the two goal lead, the Addicks conceded a soft penalty when Jorge Teixeira was adjudged to have fouled Jonson Clarke-Harris in the box.
Clarke-Harris took the penalty himself, but blazed it over the bar.
There was one final twist to come. Ademola Lookman came on in stoppage time, but still had time to add a fourth. The teenager was played in by Gudmundsson and beat Camp with aplomb to bring a fitting end to a wonderful afternoon for the South Londoners.
Riga’s influence shone through, the team were focused, played for each other and looked full of confidence.
It was good to see both strikers score. Hopefully, Makienok’s outstanding display will give him more self belief.
Charlton will go into next Saturday’s vital clash with Bristol City at The Valley in buoyant mood.
