Gillingham midfielder Luke Rooney is in talks with League Two side Swindon Town after the two clubs agreed a fee.

The Wiltshire side managed by Paulo Di Canio, lodged a bid for Rooney last week, with some reports suggesting the fee was over £100,000 and until now Gillingham have remained tight lipped as to whether they had accepted the offer, but have now made it public that they have agreed a deal and Rooney can now talk to Swindon about personal terms.

Rooney’s future at Gillingham looked to have been coming to an end after failing to agree a new deal back in November and was subsequently dropped from the side.

He did however come back into favour on Boxing Day, coming off the bench at Crawley Town, but was then sent off for picking up two yellow cards.

Rooney came off the bench for Gillingham on Saturday in the 2-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town in what could turn out to be his last appearance for the club.

The 21 year old has made 20 appearances for The Gills this season, scoring three goals in the process and a fee of between £150,000 and £200,000 has been rumoured to have been agreed between the clubs for the midfielder who is out of contract in the summer.

Rooney has made a total of 61 appearances for Gillingham since making his debut for the club in the Carling Cup against Plymouth Argyle in August 2009 and if a deal can be done before the weekend, he could make his debut for Swindon at The County Ground on Saturday against Macclesfield.

Should Rooney make the move to Swindon, he could be back at Priestfield on Saturday 21st April when the two clubs meet in the league.
