Kent based Super 1600 driver Darren Scott headed to Mondello Park in Ireland to contest rounds 4 and 5 of the Toyo Tires British Rallycross Championship.
Scott headed into the weekend in fourth place and was looking to improve his championship chances.
The first days racing was to run the Irish Circuit in reverse, something new to the British visitors track conditions were very dusty adding another tricky element into the mix. The Pirtek supported driver stayed focused and at the Intermediate Classification stage was in a comfortable third place. A front row start for his semi-final saw Scott drive his Citroen C2 to second spot and secured a second row grid place for the final. After a thrillingly close final saw the Kent man miss out on a podium spot by less than half a second.
The second days racing got underway under grey skies after overnight rain and the promise of more during the morning. Scott was showing great speed in the tricky conditions finishing in fourth for Q1. However, after a racing incident in Q2 he sustained heavy damage that on the face of it signalled the end of racing, but after some super human work Scotts team managed to piece the car back together, albeit without one of the rear brakes working!
The teams herculean effort must have spurred Scott on as he went straight out and won his remaining heat in Q3. At the Intermediate Classification stage he was in 7th place. Another plucky drive in his semi-final saw him secure a second row start for the final where he brought the Pirtek supported Super 1600 Citroen home to collect the third step on the podium. His second podium finish of the season.
At the mid stage of the season Scott now sits in a comfortable third place only 2 points behind the second placed driver and 29 behind the current leader.
The championship now moves back to Scott’s home circuit of Lydden Hill for round 6 which will be held on August Bank Holiday Monday. Racing will get underway at 09:00 where he hopes to secure another podium place in front of his home crowd.
Giving his thoughts after the weekend, Scott said: “It was a tough weekend for us this weekend with the car sustaining lots of damage but the team managed to get through it and we have a 4th and 3rd. I’m very happy considering we only had 3 wheels on my wagon at one point.
“I cannot thank the lads from Pirtek enough without their hard work and effort I wouldn’t have been able to race. The car still has a lot to give and with each round we are learning more and more ”
