Gillingham head to Rochdale this weekend looking to make it back to back wins in League One.
Ady Pennock’s side head north buoyed by last Saturday’s 1-0 win against Charlton Athletic at Priestfield, but will be missing key players ahead of the tie.
Scott Wagstaff will be missing with a calf injury after limping off against the Addicks, whilst Billy Bingham is expected to be out once again due to concussion.
However, Mark Byrne (eye) and Gabriel Zakuani (cramp) are expected to be fit enought to feature with Pennock unlikely to make many changes from the side that did so well against Charlton.
Tomas Holy really stepped up against the Addicks and will surely have a settled back four in front of him. Luke O’Neill, Ben Nugent, Zakuani and Alex Lacey looked reasonably settled against Charlton and Max Ehmer is expected to be given the holding role in midfield once again.
With Wagstaff missing out through injury, the under pressure Gillingham coaching team will possibly hand a starting role to Jake Hessenthaler alongside Byrne and Sean Clare with Conor Wilkinson and Tom Eaves set to be the front pairing.
The Gills go into the game sitting 20th in League One, sitting above their opponents on goal difference. It’s far too early in the season to call the game a six pointer, but a win will go a long way to settling some nerves for the travelling fans.
Victory could lift Gillingham as far up as mid table, whilst defeat would send them back into the relegation zone.
A week is a long time in football.
