Rochdale v Charlton Athletic preview
Rochdale v Charlton Athletic preview

Another season almost done and dusted as the Addicks head to Rochdale for the last game of the regular season.

Barring a mathematical miracle though, Lee Bowyer’s men still have two – and hopefully – three matches left. How unlikely did that seem a few weeks back?

It will be a tense and important evening for Dale, who must better Oldham’s result at Northampton if they are to avoid relegation to League Two.

Charlton will be backed by a sizeable travelling support. The 5.30pm kick-off is not ideal for those wanting to return home after the game.

Bowyer will have to balance resting tired players for the first play-off game – probably against Shrewsbury at The Valley next Tuesday – with keeping momentum going and ensuring there are no slip ups.

The interim boss has said there will not be wholesale changes though. Ahmed Kashi, Josh Magennis and Ben Reeves look the favourites to be given a breather, and Sullay Kaikai could be involved from the bench, possibly in a striking role.

‎The Addicks could line-up something like this:

Amos; Konsa, Bauer, Pearce, Dasilva; Marshall, Aribo, Forster-Caskey, Mavididi; Zyro, Ajose.

Subs: Phillips, Dijksteel, Jackson, Kashi, Reeves, Kaikai, Magennis.

‎The referee will be Tony Harrington of Cleveland.

With the pressure largely off, the visitors should be relaxed enough to turn in a good performance. It may not be such a pleasant afternoon for Dale though.

The circumstances may allow Bowyer to bring Johnnie Jackson on for his 499th career appearance.

How appropriate and deserved it would be if the skipper could bring the curtain down on his playing career with a late cameo at Wembley…..then lead his side up the steps to pick up the trophy!
