Robinson slams atrocious performance
Robinson slams atrocious performance

Charlton’s performance at Southend was described as “atrocious” by manager Karl Robinson.

He announced the squad would report to Sparrows Lane at 7.00am on Wednesday to watch and analyse the video of the game.

Robinson’s anger was understandable, and the team will need to defend a whole lot better at Wigan on Friday, but was bringing them in at 7.00am a good idea?

Mamager’s hate the Christmas schedule. The quick turnaround between games does not allow the players to recover properly, which increases the risk of injury.

The Addicks have an injury crisis – Robinson was only able to name six subs at Southend – so they will be more concerned than most about the schedule.

Clearrly the errors of the Southend game needed to be reviewed, but was 7.00am the day after the match the best time to do it?

Robinson currently has little room for manoeuvre with his team selection, and they face an arduous journey to get to Wigan.

Should they not have been maximising their recovery time, rather than getting up early for a team meeting?

The meeting could have been scheduled for after lunch. The players would have got a few more hours in bed, and their ‘punishment’ for the Southend performance would have been getting home later than normal.

Perhaps they could even have stayed in a local hotel overnight to minimise their journey time to Sparrows Lane before departing for Lancashire.

The proof of the puddong is in the eating though. Wigan at the DW is as tough a game as Charlton will face all season. Hopefully they will produce a much better performance than they did on Tuesday.
