Karl Robinson is a hands-on, tracksuit manager who is heavily involved with the coaching of the team.

As the training camp in Portmarnock confirmed, he believes in hard work, and the Addicks are one of the fittest teams in the league.

There is huge satisfaction for a manager when his week’s work is rewarded with a win, particularly one as spectacular‎ as Saturday’s against Northampton.

Robinson was obviously elated after the game:

“It was a deserved win and the 4-1 was important because it didn’t flatter us, the players were excellent.

“I didn’t think we were really on our A-Game in the last 10 minutes of the first half and, to be fair to the players, they were quite upset with their own performance at half-time, which is good.

“At the end with the hugs and the high-fives, we look like a team that is really together. We have arguments during the week and I like that; we question things and then it is down to the players to answer them on a Saturday.

‘I’m really pleased for them. This is our team, I’m just one cog of this whole club – the fans are another – and I think the people who come and support us deserve this,” said Robinson.

The manager singled out on loan keeper, Ben Amos, for special praise. Amos has been under fire in some quarters, but had his best game for the Addicks on Saturday.

After showing some early hesitancy to come off his line, he went on to make some good saves, and showed a lot of bravery. He got this deserved accolade from the boss:

“He made a couple of great saves at 1-0, his domination from set-piece was good and he looked a real presence and I am really happy with him. This is the first week that he’s had a full week’s training and hopefully he will only get better.”

Robinson concluded by giving an update on the transfer situation. Charlton still want to bring in a senior keeper to allow Dillon Phillips to go out on a season long loan.

The manager has been looking for a striker for some while, and with Lee Novak apparently wanting to leave, he will probably need two new attacking options.

Here are his thoughts:

‎”‎We have two or three players that we really like and we have to work really hard to try and get them over the line. That’s us and the opposition as well because maybe the other team sees us as a threat and will not want to sell them to us.”

Those words suggest that one of the players is with a club expected to challenge for promotion. Wigan’s Northern Ireland international, Will Grigg‎, is one player who matches the profile.

‎The Addicks now face four successive away games, a Carabao Cup game at Norwich on Tuesday, a trip to Rotherham on Saturday, a Checkatrade Trophy fixture at Crawley next Tuesday, then Oldham on Saturday week, though the game against the Latics may be called off.

The Oldham match is scheduled for 2 September which is an international weekend. Josh Magennis, Jay Dasilva and Ezri Konsa are likely to be called up, so Charlton could ask for the game to be postponed.

Robinson is believed to be keen to play the match to avoid a fixture backlog, but with a number of injury concerns, he may decide it is prudent to call the game off.

It will be a much changed team that faces Norwich‎, Robinson said that only Billy Clarke and Tariqe Fosu will retain their starting places at Carrow Road.
