Robinson disappointed with Addicks
Robinson disappointed with Addicks

Charlton totally dominated the first half at Plymouth on Saturday. It seemed a question of when – not if – the Addicks would score.

Karl Robinson’s side moved the ball around quickly, and created numerous clear cut chances. There was a nagging worry though, that‎ their profligacy in front of goal would come back to haunt them.

The main culprit was Josh Magennis. Argyle keeper, Luke McCormick, parried a Billy Clarke shot, then produced a wonder save to foil Magennis. But in truth, McCormick should not have been given the chance to save the follow up.

Magennis had another golden opportunity to score in the first half when he had a free header from close range. But he put his effort wide.

Jake Forster-Caskey’s goal bound shot beat the keeper, but was headed off the line by Ryan Edwards.

The Pilgrims got into the game in the second half, and were very direct. They made an early breakthrough when Charlton failed to deal with a corner, and Jake Jervis back heeled home from close range.

Argyle sealed the three points late on with a breakaway goal following a corner. It was Jervis who scored again, though Ben Amos should have done better.

Here are Robinson’s thoughts on the game:

“We should have been out of sight in the first half, we were excellent, the way we moved the ball, rotated and created chances was excellent.

“It’s all well and good playing nice football but you have to have an end product. We missed too many chances and in the second half we switched off. We knew the only way they’d score would be from a set-piece.
“Plymouth are a massive, physical team and we defended everything really well but we switched off at one corner and we were punished. That’s the disappointing thing and that’s how clear it was today: missed chances, switched off.

“You can’t question the desire, you can’t question us between the two boxes, you can’t question the support. You can’t question any of that. We just didn’t take our chances.

“Let’s not forget, they’ve had a player score two goals and the man of the match was the goalkeeper, which says an awful lot about the game.”

The Addicks were backed by a following of 990 at Home Park, and the main topic of conversation was Tony Watt’s alleged departure.

After the match, the manager confirmed that the Scottish striker had left the club and added:

‎”I want to bring someone in that can help us to take those chances. We’ll have a discussion internally about how we go about getting someone in.

“There are four or five that we like and we have to be clever in the market.”

The statement suggests that Robinson is looking for a striker to compete with Magennis, not just a back up player.

It is possible that he may recruit a youngster from‎ a Premier League club. It is no secret that he wanted to bring Arsenal’s Stephy Mavididi back to The Valley.

Charlton are still looking to bring in a keeper. Amos has not sparkled in his opening two games, and Robinson will want a player capable of putting pressure on the Bolton loanee.

If a keeper does arrive, the Addicks will send Dillon Phillips out on a season long loan.
