Robinson also told Sky that 40% of the squad did not care enough, and that before the game he had seen something that he had never seen at any football club.
Clearly highly emotional, Robinson may have given himself further problems. As he mentioned, he has to motivate the team, but how will they respond after that outburst?
Robinson said there will be changes at Northampton on Saturday, and that he did not expect any of the players not selected to knock on his door. By inference, they are the ones his harsh words were directed at.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that Robinson was praising the squad for their honesty, so he has had a major shift in stance sonce then.
The Addicks have won just 3 of the 17 games they have played under the former MK Dons boss.
The results have declined since Robinson’s arrival, and some have questioned the wisdom of replacing Russell Slade, a steady if unspectacular manager.
Charlton took just three points from seven games in February. It was always going to be a season defining month, and it saw the club’s play-off hopes extinguished.
They are now six points above the drop zone, and probably need another nine or ten points to guarantee their safety, as they enter the final two months of the season.
Robinson has six games to steer his team through in March. First up is Saturday’s trip to Northampton, and there is a game at table-topping Sheffield United later in the month.
After the game at Sixfields, the Addicks have three home games, Scunthorpe, Walsall and Bradford will come to The Valley. MK Dons will be the visitors at the end of the month.
All connected with the club will be hoping the team pick up enough points this month, to avoid looking nervously over their shoulder as the season enters it’s denouement.
It is a situation Charlton should never have been in. There is enough quality in the squad for them to have mounted a serious promotion bid.
Clubs such as Scunthorpe, Fleetwood and Southend do not have a fraction of the resources available at The Valley, yet they are in the top six.
When the season is over, many will reflect not on what might have been, but what should have been.
