Kent’s Adam Riley is happy with James Tredwell being on international duty, as it gives him a chance to stake his own claim for a place in the side.
22-year-old spinner Riley has been playing back-up to the experienced Tredwell for much of his time at Kent. But, with Tredwell having given up the Kent captaincy at the end of last season to focus on his international commitments, the Sidcup-born youngster knows that there could be chances for him to secure his place in the team.
“As soon as the England squads get announced, I always look for Treddy’s name because I know if Treddy’s away, there will be more opportunities for me to play”, Riley explained.
“Fingers crossed England get to the final [of the World T20] so he’s away for as long as possible!”
Riley impressed for Kent when called upon in 2013, claiming 16 wickets in the shorter forms of the game, and averaging a more than respectable 26 with the ball from his five Championship appearances.
“It’s a big year”, he told KSN. “Hopefully I’ll stay in the one-day team like I did last year and obviously with Treddy away, get into the four-day side and put in some more performances.”
After a particularly wet off-season, Riley knows, however, that the pitches – particularly early in the season – may not suit his off-spin especially well.
“We’ll need the weather to dry up a bit for the wickets to start suiting spin”, he said. “Last year we had a few injuries as well, and it allowed us to play two spinners on some occasions.
“Hopefully Treddy and I can get a run in the side, and when he’s away, I’ll step in.”
Riley, a Loughborough University student, will see his two sides come together in Kent’s pre-season opener, starting on Monday 7 April at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.
“Obviously Kent are playing Loughborough in their season opener, so if Treddy’s back for that, maybe I can play for Loughborough and try and take a few poles against my teammates down here!”, Riley said.
“It could cause a bit of controversy in the dressing room if I take a few wickets, but it will be good practice as well going forward!”
