Richards agrees two year deal at Luton

Former Gillingham defender Garry Richards has joined up with Danny Spiller by agreeing a deal with Conference Premier side Luton Town.

The 26 year old centre back has agreed a two year deal with the Hatters after his release from The Gills at the end of last season.

Richards made 122 apperances for Gillingham in a four year period after signing from Southend United, but was deemed surplus to requirements at Priestfield.

Speaking about Richards’ capture, Luton Town manager Paul Buckle told lutontown.co.uk of his delight at his fifth capture in 10 days.

“I’m after winners – and Garry is a winner,” said Buckle. “With both Colchester and Gillingham he has had the experience of winning promotion.

“He’s a leader too, and has a real presence in defence. He is strong and powerful .

“I have said before that I do not want this team to be a soft touch. Garry will make sure of that. I do not want players shirking responsibility – I want my men to stand up for themselves and he epitomises the kind of character I’m looking for in my defence.”

Shortly after the announcement, Richards tweeted: “Great to now officially be a Luton town player!! Can’t wait to get started!!”
