It was a relief to Charlton’s travelling fans when the final whistle went on Saturday. The Addicks had conceded late goals to drop points in their previous three games.
Karl Robinson’s side had controlled the game well apart from a fifteen minute spell after MK Dons scored what proved to be there consolation goal.
But similarly at Doncaster a week earlier, the home side rarely threatened yet somehow managed to snatch a point.
So it was understandable that those of a red and white persuasion were a little nervous as the final minutes approached.
The manager explained that simple bad luck had been responsible for those dropped points:
“The players saw the last ten minutes out wonderfully well. But we did that away at Doncaster.
“We played no differently here than we did at Doncaster, but for a deflection. We played no differently against Bradford the other day, but for another deflection dropping to one of their players.
“We’ve seen games out very, very well and today was a little bit pleasing because it was an important one to get us back into the top six.
“We went to a back five late on and just felt that it would see it out a bit better. I’m really proud of the players for how they’ve achieved what they’ve done today,” said Robinson.
The Addicks were backed by nearly 1,200 fans in Buchinghamshire, and they were vocal throughout.
Robinson acknowledged their contribution after the match:
“The three points were the most important thing. Those fans who were in the stands were outstanding.
“I was trying to get them going with two or three minutes to go, but they were already at a phenomenal noise level
“I want to thank them so much, because they’ve worked very hard to help us. I think they realised with five minutes to go that we needed them more than the players needed me.
“The fans stood up today and without them, we may not have seen that out,” said the manger.
Ben Reeves returned to the side and had an effective game at the home of his former club.
Reeves also acknowledged the part played by the fans, and was quick to highlight the contribution of fellow midfielders, Ahmed Kashi and Jake Forster-Caskey,
He also made reference to the switch to a back three that Robinson made for the final few minutes:
“We saw it out and, in particular, I thought Ahmed Kashi and Jake Forster-Caskey in midfield were outstanding.
“They were excellent in the last 15-20 minutes, which was great for us, and we had some great support from the stands as well.
“Given what has happened in the last three games, where we haven’t seen them out, it gives us another option to help hold on to the points.
“Our shape was brilliant after we changed and we even still had the counter attack in us as well,” said Reeves.
The win will send Charlton into Saturday’s clash with table-toppers, Shrewsbury at The Valley, full of confidence.
