Barnsley are masters of putting a late season run together that sees them escape relegation.Charlton Athletic

A few weeks back, they appeared to be embarking on another such run but they have stuttered again recently.

They lost to a Jermaine Beckford goal at Bolton on Saturday and also have to deal with a lengthy trip to The Valley ahead of Tuesday’s game.

Such small details are often the difference between winning at this stage of the season, especially when the fixture list becomes congested.

Players do little training, with huge emphasis being put on recovery time as Johnnie Jackson explained:

“It has been a tough schedule, I don’t think there is any getting away from that.

“It is pretty much four weeks that we have been at it Saturday, Tuesday, and we know it is going to be like that until the end of the season.

“We highlighted that about a month ago and said that there will be very little time to train and have put a lot of focus onto recovery.”

For the games at Forest and Leeds, the Addicks stayed overnight both before and after the matches to aid the recovery process.

Jose Riga is unlikely to make too many changes to his team on Tuesday, with the front three players being the main area where he may change things.

Charlton fans were delighted to see Chris Solly return at Brighton after a lengthy absence, but he is unlikely to start against Barnsley.

A more logical step would be for Solly to play in Monday’s Under-21 match with Swansea. Warranted he suffers no reaction, Solly would then be in contention for a place against Bolton on Friday.

Jonathan Obika, omitted at the Amex, will be available again following a family commitment.

Barnsley are bottom of the table, five points adrift of the Addicks but having played a game more. The Tykes can get a maximum of 51 points if they win their remaining five games.

Defeat at The Valley would reduce that to 48, so Tuesday’s game is pretty much The Last Chance Saloon for Danny Wilson’s team.

Yeovil can also get no more than 48 points, so a Charlton win against Barnsley would effectively mean the sides in the lower reaches of the Championship would be scrambling to avoid one remaining relegation place.

A win for Charlton would see them climb to eighteenth, overtaking Blackpool, Doncaster and Birmingham, with a draw enough to see them move above Blackpool.

It will be a tense night for both sets of fans.
