Recognition for Charlton pair
Recognition for Charlton pair

It is the time of the year when the seasonal awards are given out and Charlton fans will soon be voting for their Player Of The Year, which is being organised by the Fans Forum.

The first ‘Best Players’ list has been announced in the May issue of Four Four Two, which is out today. The magazine does an annual Football League Top 50 Players list. It is obviously dificult, if not impossible, to compare the strengths of say, a League Two striker with a Championship goalkeeper. The magazine canvasses the opinions of fans about opposition players that have impressed them when compiling the list.

The list is interesting and provides plenty of food for thought. Needless to say, Charlton have fared far better this year than last.

Possibly a surprise is the winner, Cardiff midfielder, Peter Whittingham, who is followed by Southampton duo, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, who are second and third respectively.

The highest placed League One player is Huddersfield goal machine, Jordan Rhodes in fourth, with the top five being completed by Crystal Palace winger, Wilfred Zaha.

Charlton have two top ten entrants, Johnnie Jackson at six and Bradley Wright-Phillips at ten. Sheffield United striker, Ched Evans is seventh in the list with Championship pair, Kevin Nolan of West Ham and Robert Snodgrass of Leeds, completing the top ten.

The list is supposed to exclude loanees from Premier League clubs but Sheffield Wednesday’s only entrant is Wolves on loan defender, Danny Batth, who creeps in at the end of the list.

The Football League recently asked managers to name the best three opposition players their clubs had faced this season. Jackson again headed the Charlton contingent in that list, finishing runner-up to Jordan Rhodes.

The PFA awards, including the divisional teams of the year, will be announced in the next few weeks so there will be plenty for fans to argue about during the summer.
