Former Addicks starlet, Joe Gomez, will be out for the rest of the season, after suffering a serious knee injury playing for England Under-21s earlier in the week.
Gomez has been a regular at left-back for Liverpool this season, and with Jurgen Klopp recently installed as manager at Anfield, the injury could not have come at a worse timefor Gomez.
The South London Press has reported that Charlton are set to offer 20-year-old central defender, Harry Lennon, a new deal.
Lennon is currently loan at Gillingham and scored his first League goal on Saturday.
The Addicks will try to get back to wining ways against high flying Reading at the Madejski on Saturday.
At his Thursday afternoon press conference, Guy Luzon seemed to indicate that none of his injured players would be fit in time to play at Reading. Here is what he said:
“Unfortunately, we are in the same situation as before. Reza has returned to training. Simon is not ready yet, Igor Vetokele is injured, and so is Cristian Ceballos.
“I know there are a few more injured players but I can’t remember them all because there are so many. What is important now is that we focus on who we do have available and concentrate on Reading,” said Luzon.
It was surprising that Stephen Henderson was not mentioned by name, but the inference is that he will not play on Saturday. Ahmed Kashi also looks unlikely to return.
There were rumours earlier in the week that the Irish custodian would be involved in Monday’s Under-21 game at Ipswich, but that did not happen. It could be that Henderson’s return may be delayed slightly.
Simon Makienok was expected to be fit but will not be ready. The Dane is pivotal to Charlton’s attacking strategy and his continued absence will give Luzon major problems.
Makienok picked up a hamstring pull at Wolverhampton at the end of August, but returned as a substitute in the next game, against Rotherham, as a second half substitute for Igor Vetokele.
He then started the next game, against Huddersfield at The Valley on 15 September, this time the roles were reversed, with Vetokele coming on as a substitute for Makienok.
More than four weeks later, the big striker is still not ready to return.
Reading also have injury problems, and are likely to be without five first teamers – Hal Robson-Kanu, Jonathan Bond, Stephen Quinn, Matej Vydra and Anton Ferdinand.
One decision Luzon will have to make, is whether to give skipper, Johnnie Jackson, his first start of the season after his dramatic impact from the bench against Fulham. Luzon said this at his press conference:
“He (Jackson)looks better in training. I’m sure he has the quality and character to influence the Reading game. He will take part.”
Luzon’s team may look something like this:
Pope; Solly, Diarra, Bauer, Fox; Gudmundsson, Cousins, Jackson, Mousa; Watt, Ahearne-Grant.
Subs: Mitov, Sarr, Holmes-Dennis, Bergdich, Ba, Kenndy, McAleny.
The referee will be Rob Lewis from Shropshire.
Despite their injuries, the Royals will be hot favourites to win the game. Charlton may have to wait a little longer to end their winless run.
