After a competitive draw at Cray Valley PM, Welling United manager Brad Quinton spoke of his pleasure about the progress that his group of players are making.
He enthused “It’s our third game in. We’ve only let in two goals and one was a penalty. The opposition did very but I think that we edged it.”
As far as the game with Cray was concerned, it was very competitive and he was delighted with that saying “It was good. It was good to see. We gave a little bit. I don’t dislike that but what I do want is for us to be more controlled. I don’t want us losing our shape. We did that in the first half which was down to frustration when they were getting niggled a bit.
“I spoke to them in the dressing room at half time and said that we need to work harder as a group. If someone’s not having a great ten minutes you get round each other and work harder as a group. My team talk to them for the second half was to start high, press together, no balls go through the middle of us, we work harder when they’ve got the ball and the response was spot on.”
Quinton continued “We looked like the stronger team as the game went on, fitness wise as well, and there were three or four exceptional performances tonight. It was minutes for the boys and we look forward to Saturday’s game (their next friendly).
“The pitch was good. The tempo was good and the boys wanted to get on the ball. People are vying for places. I’m really impressed with that second half performance considering the first half wasn’t what I expect when we were too deep and when we did go forward we were too far away from our supporting runners.”
One player who didn’t play in the game, and who has left Welling to joint the Millers was Connor Dymond. Quinton said “We wish him well. He didn’t play tonight because he’s nursing an injury. We wish him a speedy recovery. He’s a fantastic player and a great lad who I didn’t want to go but I understand what he wants to do in the future and they offered him that.”
