Two goals in injury time cost Welling United as they allowed Slough Town snatch a point at their Arbour Park ground.
After the match, the Wings’ manager, Bradley Quinton cut a forlorn figure as he sat in the dug-out with his head bowed trying to work out how his team had failed to win all three points. Eventually he emerged and joined the de-briefing on the pitch and appeared to pull no punches with his comments.
Still clearly ‘shell-shocked’ he spoke of his frustrations afterwards saying “From going four-one up, youngsters comes to mind. Inexperience comes to mind. No-one is organising in the team is another one that comes to mind. Not finishing our chances comes to mind. Ill discipline and being sent off, it was a silly yellow card in the first place, handbags, puts the team under pressure.
“Two forced subs through injury and you make another one and you go down to ten men as well. Then you concede a goal in injury, injury, injury time then the ref blows up so it’s tough for me to take. Disorganised and I won’t accept it.”
Even though a point at Slough wouldn’t have seemed disappointing before the game, not winning after being four-one up felt like a loss and Quinton could take no solace. “We should win the game. We had enough in the arsenal to win the game. That’s not acceptable.
“There were too many inexperienced boys, and not helping each other and not helping a youth academy player (Brad Ryan), who’s got a good future in front of him, to come on and not organise him and ask him to do what they need him to do after being on the pitch for nearly seventy minutes. It’s a lack that I do not have in my team, I won’t have so that’s the disappointing side for me to accept that.”
In the latter stages of the game, Welling conceded far too many free-kicks. Quinton continued “People not marking and people giving away fouls is not acceptable. That’s what happens when you’re tired and you go down to ten men. People passing the buck and not marking. Then we switch off for second balls. Very, very disappointed to not get three points.”
For the first half and first part of the second half, Welling were excellent. Quinton confirmed “At half time they got a pat on the back. The team talk was ‘Very well done. Don’t stop there. Don’t leave it there. Go out and finish the job’
“We had a few more chances, second half, but we didn’t put the ball away. We made some substitutions with the wrong personnel on the bench but there’s some new players to come in which I’m excited for and that will happen next week.”
Two injuries and a suspension won’t help when Welling are next in action at Eastbourne Borough in two weeks time. “Ill discipline again” moaned Quinton.”Probably not holding themselves up and being honest with ‘I’m feeling it a little bit. I need to come off’ where they just want to play. It’s something I need to monitor.
“We should have come away with three points, end of. There’s no mentality to win and win ugly. That’s my main title at the minute, that I need to fix, and I will do it.”
“We need to be focussed on preparing for hard work this week, a hard session from me personally. I’ll probably give my staff a night off and I personally will be working them. I need them to sit down and digest their performances, whether they think they’ve done enough or whether they think they think can play at this level is their decision.”
