Having gone in level at the break, Welling would have hoped to take advantage of having the wind behind them in the second period but it wasn’t to be.
Not for the first time this season, failing to defend corners proved costly as both goals conceded by the Wings came when they failed to clear their lines. Wings manager Brad Quinton felt frustrated and said “The first half, I thought we were the better (team).
“Second half, with the wind, we tended to play too many passes in our own half rather than play to our strengths. What we were going to do was play in and off of Ro (Rowan Liburd) get the ball out wide like they did, with the wind and get crosses in the box. We didn’t tend to do that, that’s why I had to make some subs, to go for it, again.
“It’s three games now that it’s a mistake from a set-piece. We’re not marking from second phase. Collectively, the guys are making single errors rather than a team that is doing better than us or outdoing us with world class goals or being better than us on the day.
He continued “These are the errors that you need to work harder to get yourselves out of a rut and I find us being in a rut at this moment in time. There are some positives to take especially in the first half, I think we should have gone in in front.”
In the second half, especially, Welling had a lot of possession but the build up play was at a military pace. Quinton conceded “I think that we overplayed at times, certainly in the middle third, rather than in their half hurting them. It was cute and nice etc, but overdoing it and too many touches in the second half when we had the wind with us.
“It was a strong wind as well so we shouldn’t be doing that. You need to move the ball and get the ball in wide and get balls in the box and it was frustrating because we did a helluva lot more than that when we played Slough the other week and we got four goals out of it.”
Once again, there were four debuts, and when asked whether they had been given the opportunity to train, Quinton replied “Two of the boys haven’t. The other two have. Because of injuries and stuff like that, we wanted to bring in some players and strengthen.
“The boys have held their hands up and said who wasn’t marking their man for the goal. I respect that because the other week the guys didn’t want to own up and I let them have that in training. I don’t mind people making mistakes, we all make mistakes, but you need to own up for your mistakes and the lads did that.”
As yet, Quinton hasn’t been able to have any consistency in his selection and he explained “We haven’t had a settled side because we haven’t had a settled fixture list. It’s stop, start, stop, start, stop, start. I’m not making excuses but at the end of the day it’s awkward. We have to deal with it. You have to get on with it. It’s been single errors. It’s not teams who have been better than us.”
He also admitted that the squad isn’t the finished product yet. He continued “I’ve got a meeting in the week (with the directors). We are working absolutely well, well within the budget at this moment in time so we’ll be looking at what we can do to strengthen and now that we’ve got a run of consistent games I’ll find out who I can bring in to bring a bit more experience, to organise and to stop these mistakes.”
