Quinton delighted with Welling win

Before Brad Quinton took the reins at Welling United, they had only won once on the road all season but victory at Dulwich Hamlet was their third away win in four.

Storm Dennis and all that Dulwich could throw at them could not stop Welling’s progress as they claimed a well warranted victory. After the game, Quinton was delighted. He said “I thought the boys were tremendous. We should have scored two or three more in the second half but I’m over the moon with that result in conditions like that. Where we are in the league now, you never know. You never know.”

Bradley Goldberg and Philip Roberts were returned to the starting line-up with Adam Coombes and Aaron Cosgrave dropping out.

Quinton explained “My squad are getting to know now what I’m like  with regards to who plays is down to what I feel of us winning the game.

“There’s nothing I don’t believe in, in the squad. My players, as long as they do what I ask them to do will do very, very well and they’re all buying into that so fair play to them. They need the accolade as well. We made the tactical changes to help us win the game today and I thought it went well. It went really, really well.”

One player missing from the squad was Rob Swaine following injury and then sickness.

Quinton confirmed “He’s still off at the minute. My bench, they’re very good as well. I’ve got to be focussed on what’s on the training field at this minute in time. My physios can look after my injured players but ultimately I want players who want to dig in and work hard and do what I need them to do with my staff.

“Some of them are coming in an extra day so fair play to them. The offer’s there for them, not just two nights from one, possibly three with a day time as well.”

Romoney Crichlow-Noble scored the only goal but then had to leave the field with a facial injury.

Quinton said “There was an ambulance here. We made sure that somebody looked after him. He wasn’t concussed.”

Swaine’s absence meant that there was no natural centre half on the bench so Connor Dymond covered. Quinton was pleased with his contribution saying “Hes done well, Connor. Hes been out, ten yellow cards, so he missed out on two games. Discipline needs to be better for everyone at this stage of the season but he’s a player that can do all over the park if necessary.”

Chiori Johnson also drew praise from Quinton who said “Chiori’s been superb since Connor’s been out and right at the end Chiori’s positioning, hes tucked in and not been out of the game. Chiori’s defended really well.”

Another player returning from suspension was Bradley Rolt, on loan from Peterborough United. “He’s back for the rest of the season.” confirmed Quinton.

“He’s another good player and I thought he did well. Bradley Goldberg did well up front as well. They (Dulwich) didn’t cope with the formation in the first half. We got a lot of joy from the two boys who were playing in the deeper role.”

Gavin McCallum has not been involved in recent matches and may be allowed to go out and get game time elsewhere but Quinton has no problem with his professionalism. “Gav’s attitude has been absolutely first class. He’s training well.” confirmed Quinton.

Montel Agyemang has also had limited playing time, however he did come on as a substitute at Dulwich. “I’ve got all the records of how many minutes people have played, how many people have come off, how many people have not played. I’ve got a complete record of that.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

“I need to keep everyone’s fitness levels up because when they get the opportunity they want to take it with both hands because if they don’t, they’re going to see themselves sitting in the stand and getting cold at this time of year.

“Monts has done well. Hes trained well. Fair play to him. Hes done a job when we needed him to come on and steady the ship a little bit. Everyone should be able to play in more than one position.”

Welling now prepare for next Saturday’s home game with Chippenham Town as they look to continue their progression.
