Quiet week at The Valley
Quiet week at The Valley

The emergency loan window closes on Thursday and clubs up-and-down the country will be scurrying around to finalise their squads for the run in.

For some it will be to strengthen for a promotion push, for others it will be to add a player or two as they strive to avoid the drop.

Charlton are unlikely to be very active in terms of players coming in, though one or two of the club’s youngsters  could go out to gain first team experience.

Lawrie Wilson was touted for a loan move earlier in the season but Friday’s switch to Rotherham came out of the blue.

Wilson played all 90 minutes of Rotherham’s defeat at the hands of neighbours, Sheffield Wednesday, at the New York Stadium on Saturday.

Steve Evans’ side are hovering just above the bottom three and Evans will be hoping his team are strong enough to retain their Championship status.

So dramatic has been the Addicks’ turnaround recently, that they are safe with seven games to go.

Guy Luzon’s team are already certain to finish above Blackpool and Millwall, and for Wigan to overhaul Charlton, the Latics would have to win all their remaining games, and the South Londoners lose all of theirs.

The upturn in form has come a little too late for the Addicks to squeeze into the play-off zone, they are thirteen points adrift of sixth place.

Of the senior first team squad players, only Neil Etheridge, and maybe Simon Church,  are possibles to go out this week.

Two youngsters who are attracting interest from bigger clubs are Jordan Cousins and Joe Gomez.

Newcastle watched the duo have impressive games against Reading on Saturday.

Charlton have the pair signed up to long term deals and it would take substantial bids in the summer to prise them away from The Valley.

With Financial Fair Play regulations now in place, Premier League teams are more aware of the need to have young, British players on their books.

Last summer, Newcastle signed two of Nottingham Forest’s talented youngsters – keeper Karl Darlow and defender  Jamaal Lascelles – but allowed them to go back to the City Ground on season long loans for this campaign.

For once, the last few days before a transfer window closes, will not be busy at The Valley.

The fans will not be anticipating any signings and behind the scenes, there will be no frantic last minute attempts to bring players in.
