Pre-season begins in earnest
Pre-season begins in earnest

The early days of pre-season training are probably the least favourite part of the year for most professional footballers.Bromley v Charlton4

Things are not as bad as they once were though, most players have fitness regimes to adhere too during the close season and return in pretty good shape.

At Charlton, the players have to come in for assessment during the close season, and after further checks on Wednesday and Thursday this week, the real work will begin on Friday.

Thus far, it has been quiet on the recruitment front, only Mark Gower has been signed, and he is a familiar face following his loan stint at the end of last season. There are the usual rumours that you get at this time of the year, including a Premier League striker with a bit of pedigree coming on a year long loan, but nothing concrete in terms of signings.

Despite Chris Powell wanting to do his business early, it looks like being a summer when clubs will do much of their trading late in the window. With the Welling game scheduled for Saturday week, immediately followed by the training camp in Spain, Powell will be anxious to get some new faces in during the next 10 days.

The development squad will now play an additional game at Ebbsfleet on Sunday 28 July. Former Charlton CEO, Pater Varney, is involved with Fleet of course.

Prices have now been confirmed for the warm-up game at Dagenham & Redbridge on 23 July. Adults will pay £10 to stand on the terraces and an additional £2 if they wish to sit, while concessions will pay £7 and £8 respectively for the same options.
