Chris Powell could scarcely have been happier following a comprehensive win for Charlton at the weekend.
Another brace for Bradley Wright-Phillips gave the Addicks a two goal cushion at the break. Hollands and Wagstaff doubled that advantage in the second period, a performance that was described as ‘excellent’ by the boss:
“It was an excellent team performance.
“This is a difficult place to come as many teams and people know but for us to walk away with three points, four goals and a clean sheet is exceptional.
“It just caps off a fantastic week for us. Three games in a week is always very hard and a lot of teams freshen it up and put in fresh players but I’ve stuck with the starting XI and they have produced the goods again today so I’m really pleased,” said Powell.
Since the Stevenage defeat, Charlton have won all three subsequent matches, picking up nine points, scoring ten goals and conceding just one. When a long unbeten run comes to an end, the secret is to immediately go on another one. Powell could not have hoped for a better response from his team. He continued:
“It’s been a great reaction. We lost our unbeaten run there but I challenged the boys as soon as that game was over to go on another unbeaten run.
“We’ve done that, we’ve won three out of three and are making statements as we go along.
“I know it’s pretty early – just a third of the season has gone – and for us to have 37 points is very, very pleasing but we know what our aim is this year, and for us to come here, which is always a tough call, and get the result was great.
“To travel up and preparing way we did and to play in the way we did I’m really happy for all our supporters as it’s a long old journey for them as well.
“Quite a few made it up today, maybe as they are very buoyant at how we are doing and we’ve given them a good performance away from home. We like it on the road this year,” said Chris before talking about the goals scored by his team, “We took our goals very well today.
“Bradley’s an exceptional goalscorer but he will be the first one to say to anyone that he cannot do it without the team providing the chances for him.
“Of course he takes them, Yann Kermorgant has been taking them and Paul Hayes has too, and it’s pleasing that Danny Hollands has two goals in a week after last Saturday’s goal, and I’m also happy for Scott Wagstaff too.
“He hasn’t scored since the second game of the season and again came on and played his part.
“I’ve always said it not just about the starting XI, it’s about the 16 on a matchday and the other players that haven’t even travelled are also important to me. Over the course of the season everyone will play their part.
“Bradley goes onto 12 now so he’s very happy with his form and I am very happy with his and the team’s form at the moment,” purred the boss.
Powell concluded by giving his thoughts on how he felt the season had gone so far:
“It’s gone beyond what most people would have thought.
“I knew I brought in a lot of good players in the summer. They are excelling and showing a very good team spirit amongst them and have a real togetherness.
“They’ve got that winning mentality that they want to get three points in each and every game, and they have proved that winning 11 games out of the 16.”
The performance made the long journey worthwhile for the fans present at Victoria Park. Amongst them was Rob Elliott who had a slightly shorter journey of course. Still very much a Charlton fan, Rob enjoyed the match as much as anyone and was given a rousing send off when he left a couple of minutes from the end.
