Powell pleased with point at Wolves

Saturday was one of those days when the game match seemed like two entirely different games.

Before the interval, Charlton barely made a foray into Wolves’ half, but in the second period they were very much in the ascendancy.

They had to survive an early scare in that second period when Tongo Doumbia’s goalbound effort hit Kevin Doyle on the head. Though the ball ended up in the back of the net, it was correctly disallowed for offside. Had the Addicks gone two down at that stage, it is doubtful if they could have recovered.

But things can change quickly in football and almost immediately Lawrie Wilson restored parity for the visitors.

Here are Chris Powell’s initial post match thoughts:

“It was a tough first period for all the boys, but you have to give credit to Wolves, they were decent and took their goal very well.

“I was thinking that it was going to be a long afternoon but I managed to get them in at 1-0, which was important.

“It was very similar scenario to Tuesday where we needed to sort a few things out. I just felt that we needed to get forward more and believe in ourselves, because we’ve got quality and we showed that in abundance on Tuesday and especially today.

“We deservedly got an equaliser and there was only one team in it.

“I knew we would get a chance to go and win it. It fell to Rob Hulse, who again produced selfless running and was tireless for us.

“He was involved in the goal and it would have been a match winning header from him but it just went wide. So I’m standing here thinking it’s a good point in one way, but it could quite possibly have been all three,” said Powell.

The manager is right, he could well have gone home with all three points but equally, his team could have returned empty handed.

Charlton need to start a little quicker – they have gone behind in eight of their last ten games – and have failed to win any of them. In the other two matches, at Ipswich and Blackpool, the Addicks took the lead and the three points.

Last season the mantra was to come out of the blocks quickly, which proved to be more effective than the more cagey starts Charlton have produced this term.

The team are perhaps overly cautious, it is now more than seven months since they scored more than twice in a game. Though the defence is solid, they have only kept two clean sheets in their fourteen competitive matches this season. So, when they go behind, it is unlikely that they will get more than a point at best.

It was a cross from Cedric Evina that created the equaliser. Former Charlton loanee, Carl Ikeme, foiled Rob Hulse but Wilson was on hand to slot in the rebound.

Hulse had subsequent chances to score, culminating in a late header from Solly’s cross that he steered wide. Had that gone in, Charlton would have been celebtating a win. Powell went on to speak about Hulse:

“It was a good save by Carl Ikeme. The angle was quite tough for him (Hulse) but it was still a good save.

“He could have scored the first, that was eventually put in by Lawrie Wilson, but then he had the header at the end. You just think other teams have punished us and we need to punish other teams.

“The performance of the players and the character and the real drive is there and we just need to get those extra two points.

“Before the two games (at Elland Road and Molineux), you think beforehand that you would be pleased to come in with a point from both, but I’m standing here now, thinking we’ve survived the onslaught in both games and really put on a performance in both second halves, especially here today, when we should be walking away with three points,” added the manager.

The changes many had been clamouring for – Solly to revert to right-back, Evina to be brought in on the left and Wilson to be pushed in to midfield – have happened and had a positive effect. Wilson supplied the pass from which Dervite scored at Leeds, Evina the cross which led to the goal at Wolves and Solly’s centre gave Hulse the opportunity to grab a late winner on Saturday.

Solly and Wilson have combined well in the last two games and Powell had this to say about the former Stevenage player:

“I think he’s (Wilson) found his legs, he’s a fit young man and it was a case of him adapting to his new surroundings.

“We are a bit different to Stevenage, no disrespect to them, with regards to our crowd and ground but I think he’s getting better and better as the weeks go on.

“Especially in our two away games, I think he’s really been a forceful player for us and deservedly got his goal today and he’s one that dovetails well with Chris Solly. It’s allowed Chris to get forward well as he knows Lawrie will fill in, quite naturally. There’s a good relationship for them there and I’m really pleased for him.”

Next up are two difficult home games against Middlesbrough and Cardiff who are third and first respectively. It will be interesting to see if Powell changes tack for these games.
