A well deserved three points for the Addicks at Ewood Park on Saturday. Success in football is all about taking chances that come your way.Chris Powell8

Blackburn are having a wretched time at present, unrest behind the scenes, unpopular owners who made a rare appearance on Saturday and the first game for their third manager of the season. All this led to a an edgy atmosphere in the stadium, something the Addicks took full advantage of. Here’s how Chris Powell saw it:

“It was a well earned win today. It was hard fought and a bit of battle but I felt that we played some good football at times and we also took the chances that came our way.

“I felt we trained really hard, we had a good mindset with regards to how we should play and approach the game, and obviously it culminated in us getting the three points.”

Charlton went ahead through another wonder strke from Dale Stephens’ repertoire, this one a 25-yard screamer from his left foot. Defender that he was, Powell was quick to acknowledge the part his rearguard played in the win:

“What gave us the platform to go ahead was that Matt Taylor and Michael Morrison made some good interceptions early on when Blackburn were on the front foot.

“I felt, gradually as the game went on, that we started to assert ourselves and you sometimes need that belief in yourselves going forward. Johnnie Jackson and Chris Solly combined well, and it was a poor clearance which was snapped up by Dale.

“It was an absolutely superb goal and great technique. He’s played well of late without the goals but he fully deserved that and it gave us a foothold in the game,” said the manager.

Matt Taylor has been a revelation since his return to the first team. The game with Blackpool was Taylor’s Championship debut. Some thought the standard may have been beyond the gritty northerner but he has adjusted well and Leon Cort will struggle to regain his place.

Charlton’s traditional slow start to the game was followed by them being pushed back at the start of the second period too. Jordan Rhodes had an opportunity to restore parity immediately after the restart but the prolific marksman made no mistake when a second opportunity presented itself two minutes later.

Appleton’s hopes of a win were dashed when Yann Kermorgant put the Addicks ahead for a second time midway through the half. Powell continued:

“We managed to maintain our composure. What was important was the players have shown a bit or resolve and character to bounce back from that because at half-time you are thinking you just need to quell the crowd.

“We knew there would be a response from them and there certainly was. Jordan Rhodes does what he does best – gets them back in the game – and we just needed to get ourselves going agai, and the players did that.

“I’m really proud that they can look at one another and believe in each other that they can get the result. Yann felt in the first half that he should have got a goal but I just said to him ‘it will come again and you can be the match-winner’ and it certainly turned out like that.

“That’s what happens if you get balls in the right area. It was a quality delivery by Bradley Pritchard and, equally, a quality header to match.

“At 2-1, you know they are going to throw things at you and I felt we stemmed the tide somewhat. We were very, very resilient and got our bodies in the way and ran out winners, which was great,” added Chris before talking about the great start to 2013 and the club’s home form:

“Obviously a few people would like us to win more home games but being manager, I just want us to win points. For us to get another win on the road is very good for us.

“We work on our tactics, we work on what we need to do in each and every game and the players carry it out. Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it doesn’t but away from home we have done very, very well.

“We’ve had a good January so far, and obviously now have got a home game against Sheffield Wednesday to look forward to.”

Powell concluded by thanking the fans who made the long and arduous journey north to support the team:

“I’m really pleased that they made it here safe, that’s the first thing but also got to see their team put in a terrific effort for them, as well as each other.

“They want to see us win and they want to see us perform. We won’t always win but I’m sure it just caps it off that they can make the long journey home again safe knowing that their team has got three points in the bag. I’m really grateful for them coming up.”

The win propelled the Addicks into 12th place with a home game against Sheffield Wednesday to come on Saturday. Charlton lie just three points off 7th spot. If they can continue their good run, possibly aided by a fresh face or two, they could yet have a successful season.
