Chris Powell commented on a few of the transfer stories currently doing the rounds during his Thursday press conference.Chris Powell3

Powell confirmed interest in Colchester’s Anthony Wordsworth and has clearly done his homework on the player. He is aware that Wordsworth’s contract expires in the summer and there appears to be a bit of brinkmanship going on.

Powell said that he would not rush in to a deal but something could happen this month or in the summer. Reading between the lines, it would appear the Addicks are unwilling to pay more than a nominal fee and are prepared to risk losing the player by waiting until the summer.

Charlton have players they could use as part of the deal and perhaps the one most likely to go to Colchester is keeper, John Sullivan. Sullivan has already had a loan spell with the Essex club and has dropped down the pecking order at The Valley this season.

Danny Green and Scott Wagstaff are others who might appeal to Colchester but Green’s wage demands would probably put him out of reach and Wagstaff is likely to go to another League One side.

The club will listen to offers for last season’s top scorer, Bradley Wright-Phillips. Wright-Phillips has had limited chances recently but has scored just once this season. The Addicks are believed to have made an enquiry to take Bolton’s Marvin Sordell on loan. Sordell has struggled to make an impact at the Reebok since his £3m transfer from Watford a year ago.

Another striker Charlton could be interested in is Norwich’s Simeon Jackson. The Canaries currently have injury problems with their strikers so an imminent deal is unlikely.

Powell poured cold water on the story suggesting that Danny Green may be going to Birmingham in exchange for 34-year-old Wade Elliott. Elliott is a left sided midfielder so it seems that Wordsworth is the manager’s preferred option to bolster that position.

Interestingly, Powell said that he had spoken to Birmingham’s assistant manager, Derek Fazackerley, about another matter earlier in the week. With Wright-Phillips being available, it could be that Powell was enquiring about a possible replacement. The Blues have strikers they would release but their wage demands could be beyond the Addicks.
