Powell ko’d by Kent deal

Kent’s new signing Mike Powell may have signed a two year deal at Canterbury, but he has got one last fight left in Glamorgan.

The 34 year old leaves Glamorgan after a fifteen year association with the county for a two year deal with Kent, but on Friday night he will swop his batting gloves for some boxing ones.

Having been told he didn’t have a future with the Welsh county, Powell is now looking forward to life at Kent and his time in the ring:

“It would have been a massive way to finish but now I am excited by a fresh challenge,” said Powell, who learned his trade at Abergavenny Cricket Club.

“There are a lot of players that I really respect at Kent – Rob Key, Geraint Jones, James Tredwell and Darren Stevens among others – so I am really excited by what lies ahead. It’s something to look forward to and it’s probably a change I needed, but at the moment I just have Peter Rogers’ fists on my mind!”

That is because he will be slugging it out with the former Wales prop in the final event of his benefit year at the Swalec Stadium.

Powell, more used to punching the ball through the covers, has been completing his preparations for the three-round bout under the watchful gaze of legendary trainer Enzo Calzaghe.

“In terms of fitness this has been a real eye-opener but I have loved it,” said Powell.

“He will be favourite because I am giving away about three stone but all my friends who have never boxed have been telling me that I just need to jab and move, jab and move.

“It’s been an enjoyable year and this should be a great ending. I’ll definitely be giving it a real go.”
