Powell full of praise for Hollands
Powell full of praise for Hollands

Charlton boss Chris Powell has praised Danny Hollands for his brace at the weekend.

Danny Hollands scored twice and had a hand in the other goal, as Charlton overcame the disappointment of surrendering a two goal lead to snatch a late win against Rochdale.

Here are Powell’s thoughts on his talented midfielder:

“I thought Danny Hollands was outstanding, he’s been quietly effective for us. He’s been a very good player in all eightvgames so far and in the last two days I’ve told him it’s about time he started getting in the box, because he does scorevgoals and he’s always had a decent goalscoring record from midfield.

“Today he was involved in the second goal with Paul Hayes, with a nice bit of combination play, and Rhoys Wiggins scoredvhis first goal for the club to put us in a good position.

“He dovetails really well with Dale Stephens and the other players, Johnnie Jackson and Scott Wagstaff, and the front two can use their experience and movement and create situations.

“That’s what we’ve been doing, and we’ve done it today and 3-2 away from home is really pleasing,” said the manager before commenting on Hollands’ wife’s impending delivery of triplets,  “He’s going to be a father of three and we really hope that goes well for his wife and him.

“He wanted a hat-trick but I think he’ll take the two. As long as everything goes well for him, it will be really good to celebrate that as well.”

Powell then gave his thoughts on the match:

“Obviously, after the first period it was all positive on our part but I did try to impress on the boys – and obviously they didn’t listen – about the importance of just quelling the pressure that we would come under.

“Fair play to Rochdale, they had the ascendancy after scoring the first goal, and deservedly got the second.

“Once we weathered it, we got into some good situations and in the end we got the winner. Looking at the whole game, I suppose we merited the three points, but I have to mention Jason Euell right at the very end, in the 94th minute, when he made a clearance off the line, and that in itself earned us three points instead of one,” said Chris before enthusing about his team’s perfect record on the room, “Whether it is one point or three, you do have to keep building on the points that you get.

“We are in a good position after eight games. It’s still early, but it’s good for everyone connected with the club that our confidence is good.

“We’ve now came back from a situation where we were 2-0 up, and then pulled back to 2-2 and then went out and got the winner.

“We’ve been 1-0 down at Bury and walked away with three points from a 2-1 win, so it’s good on the part of the players that they know mentally they can come back from any mishaps that happen.

“But I’m really pleased that away from home we’ve put down a marker, and to get 12 points from our four games on road is a fantastic feeling to have.

“If we can match our home form with that, then we will be well on our way. There’s a long way to go yet.”

As well as Euell’s late clearance, Ben Hamer and Dale Stephens combined to thwart an early Rochdale effort:

“I’m not sure if it was Ben or a clearance off Dale Stephens, but when you come away from home you do come up with different scenarios and situations that you have to deal with. There are times you have to put your bodies on the line.

“The home team generally are on the front foot and want to impress, and you have to weather the storm and get through the first 15 or 20 minutes and then get playing.

“We did that early. Apart from that chance, we got the ball down and started to play very early and that obviously helped us but you have to do it over 90-95 minutes.

“We need to weather it and not concede. We did today and obviously got the winner in the end,” concluded a delighted Powell.
