Portsmouth’s decision to make the fixture a ‘pay what you want’ game was rewarded with an excellent crowd for a pre-season game, including nearly 600 fans from South London.Portsmouth

Callum Harriott made a welcome return to the starting XI and trialist striker, Adamo Coulibali, was given another chance to impress. The team was otherwise much as expected and Chris Powell adopted a 4-5-1 formation.

The good sized crowd generated an unusually vibrant atmosphere for a pre-season game as proceedings began. Pompey are short priced favourites to win the League Two title and were ideal opponents for Powell’s team at this stage of their preparations.

Charlton took the early ascendancy and should have gone ahead after just 12 minutes. Coulibali presented Harriott with a golden, close range opportunity. Unfortunately for the youngster, he skewed his shot horribly wide.

Harriott was involved in the move that saw the Addicks take the lead after 34 minutes. A sweeping move started with Harriott playing the ball to Mark Gower who released Cedric Evina. Evina delivered a peach of a cross for Bradley Pritchard to head home at the far post.

Jed Wallace received a yellow card just after the restart, when referee, Keith Stroud, adjudged that he had exaggerated a fall.

Harriott made amends for his earlier miss when he doubled the visitors advantage midway through the half. Pompey’s rearguard failed to deal with a Johnnie Jackson free-kick and Harriott pounced to rifle the ball home.

Yann Kermorgant had been on the pitch for less than five minutes when he got his name on the score sheet. Chris Solly was bundled over in the area and Kermorgant despatched the resultant penalty past Sullivan’s right hand.

Richard Wood ensured Charlton kept a fourth clean sheet in five games by clearing off the line near the end.
